O'Reily even put out a book on how to develop applications using the free toolchain.


I'm not sure if it is exactly illegal, but jailbreaking or unlocking your phone does void your warranty with Apple.

My point is that most companies are not willing to develop or release software for the iPhone yet because it is not sanctioned by Apple.

Voiding the warranty is way far from the definition of illegal. And that's still up to the end user choice.
Developing software for such platform is, if possible, even less illegal than jailbreaking it

I believe you are arguing for the sake of arguing. Again, all I'm saying is that most major coporations are avoiding releasing software for the iPhone without Apple's consent.

You introduced a false statement ("... to release software for the iPhone when they know it is illegal") and I simply felt the need to correct it.
Because if false statements are left out there, ppl may think they're actually true.

True, it is not illegal, and I think Several companies have actually released apps for the iPhone.
