I want to post that Im still having the problem on some boot ups.. where the phone will not recieve incoming sms or phone calls. And it only seems to be happening to me so I assume its due to the new modem firmware that came with 2.1(2.11.07)... Messages and calls only come through when I myself am in a phone call.
Here is a possible cause of the problem, I think it may be related to edge data. You know how when your surfing the internet on Edge, your phone calls and sms messages will not come in until the data transfer stops? I think maybe the phone thinks that edge is being used, hence blocking incoming phone/sms data.
I back this up because when you make an outgoing phonecall it turns off the edge data(the "E" disappears from status bar) and all the sms will finally come in. Ive tried installing boss prefs to disable edge, and also have just gone into network settings to turn off data roaming, but this doesnt fix the problem, so maybe its more related to how the virgin sim's software is reacting to firmware 2.1's modem firmware(02.11.07).

The problem probably happens during the boot process, because I notice that if your phone boots up and CAN accept calls, then you have nothing to worry about as long as you dont reboot.

But if it boots up and CANNOT recieve calls, then your best bet is to shut the phone back down and boot up again.

Again I want to stress that the problem doesnt seem to happen at random while using the phone, and what I mean by that is that if your incoming calls are working, then as long as you dont reboot they WILL continue to work... so dont be scared that by using virgin sim your calls at random periods will not work.

It would really help if there were some other testers or users that have the latest modem firmware installed to compare results with me. Let me know if anyone is using virgin sim with modem firmware 2.11.07 installed.

Im going to try turning off data roaming first, then rebooting. Then after it boots up, try my incoming calls. If that takes care of the problem then I can turn on data roaming and see if the incoming calls still come in. This may be a simple solution, but is going to require a lot of reboots to try to replicate the problem, cause it only happens once every couple reboots. But I mess with my phone a lot testing other products which causes me to reboot more than the average user. I'll keep you all posted, but any help would be appreciated.

have other sim adapters done this also? If you have the time and patience, I would recommend a full restore and see if that changes anything.

Edge data is different at every location. Some locations will disconnect you from edge and let the incoming call\sms get to you, it has higher priority. Others will not force disconnection and the caller will go straight to voicemail (or you will not receive sms until you stop using data). My location is like the first, it will disconnect me from edge and let the call\text come in.

This also happens on my unlocked 2G iPhone as well as my tmobile dash and wing... its a network thing, and the fact that calls arent prioritized over data doesnt bother me, its just that I think the phone is functioning as though the data is constant. Thats the only thing I can come up with being that when I make a call it sends all the MIA SMS messages through.

And in my area it wont send you straight to voicemail, but it wont allow the call to go through either until you stop using edge. I almost think its neutral. lets say I start loading a website, now while it is loading someone decides to call... what happens is that the call wont come come in(it wont ring on my end, but it will continue to ring on the callers end until voicemail comes up), and the data will slow to a crawl until the caller hangs up. So they are kind of tug of waring... in the same situation a text message will most likely make it though, but a call will not.

UPDATE:
turning off data roaming before rebooting did not fix the problem. I could not receive incoming calls until I first released an outgoing call, or unless I turned on the data roaming.

Maybe its a possiblity that BossPrefs may have something to do with it?
Its the only app I can think of that has any control over edge data function.
Im going to try uninstalling it and rebooting a couple times to see if that problem still happens... But I love my bossprefs so I dont know what I will do if thats the problem

UPDATE 2: I turned back on data roaming. After 10 reboots I havent managed to replicate the problem.. hmm..its hiding from me now that Im in the mood to really troubleshoot

Id like to add to this.

I bought Virgin SIM's from eBay.

Currently testing the ones marked in Black (im guessing Black = Normal speed)

Travelled over 20km, switched over 5 towers, still works perfectly.

Going into Airplane mode and back out = Invalid SIM error. Need to reboot phone.

Data Roaming works perfectly, and gets EDGE working. (No 3G in my area to test)

@ reznor, I have BossPrefs installed too, and its not causing any problems.
I have enabled and disabled EDGE from BossPrefs and the Internet would stop working when disabled just as it should.
Ive tried 14 reboots in a row, (last 4 using BossPrefs) and I always have network @ bootup.

SIM Solution : VirginSIM Normal Speed.
Modem Firmware : 2.11.07
Firmware : 2.1
Calls/SMS in/out : Yes. No missing calls either.
Data EDGE : Working perfectly.
GPS : Working.
Verdict (Premature, only 1 days testing) : Pass flawlessly.

not an issue getting network. My network pops up within 4 seconds. The probelm I was having(and only every now and then) was that incoming SMS and calls were not coming in. Outgoing worked fine. Dunno what the problem couldve been. I hope I never experience it again but at the same it's frustrating not knowing what the cause was.

One thing I have changed, I just uninstalled the tzones hack from cydia and removed the network apn: wap.voicestream.com and replaced it with epc.tmobile.com

I have a weird situation. I have jailbrokened my phone with PwnageTool. I do not recall if I had VirginSIM (high speed) + T-Mobile SIM card inside or if I had the AT&T sim card inside, but now it will not work with the AT&T sim card. It does not say, "NO SIM," it just shows no bars or "NO Service." If I put in Virgin+T-Mobile, I see bars and it works.

Don't worry spooky, that's normal. If u bypass activation, the phone will not work with with an AT&T sim.

I think I've had it jailbrokened before and it worked with AT&T and synced with itunes. I'm not sure what I did differently. Will it work with other sims than AT&T?

When you jailbreak, if you selected the Activate option ie. your "NOT" on an official carrier, then any SIM of official carriers wont work.

But your SIM Solution will.

I think if you try your AT&T SIM w/ the Virgin SIM, it'll work.
