The status is very simple. Avoid the Chinese clones like the plague. Firmwares are also very important. Make sure you have the right one. I would go with Universal SIM because you can flash it if you need to, and the development is very open. I just bought it. I did not buy the pkey. Hopefully, it works. I asked the dude to flash and test it. I'll have it Monday or Tuesday.

I'm also going to ask mates of mine to call carriers in other countries in their native language to ask if they are willing to unlock. I don't know if it's carrier policy or Apple policy, but, for example, Optus in Australia will only unlock phones bought in Australia at an Optus shop.

I'm going to call Orange in Romania and say that I bought an iPhone in USA and I want to use it in Romania, please unlock it. I'll call Tim in Italy, which actually sell unlocked iPhones ($1200 on eBay), and ask the same thing. I'll call T-Mobile Germany. I'm totally curious if any carrier would oblige. I think it's important that someone with no accent who can pass for a local calls. I do wonder if this will work. Thus far, I have not seen any blog posts or articles that have tried to do this.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I've Universal SIM (v500) working very well in my iPhone 3G (Rogers) already for 3 weeks in Montreal, Canada (with Fido). Original firmware was 2.0.1 then I quickpwned and upgraded to 2.0.2. without problem. Now, I followed the suggestion by iTunes to upgrade my phone to firmware 2.1. Then I was preparing to use pwnage tools 2.1 but the phone rebooted and everything was already working very well, Fido network, 3G, phone, etc. I expected that after the rebooting the phone, it would be locked again (to Rogers) and not accepting Fido network. Am I correct? or should I use the pwnage tool anyway?

I got the i-smartphone 3G today from Hong Kong. I can't get it to work no matter what I do. It's the gold one that is setup for no cutting of the SIM. It just says no sim, or searches, then shows no bars of service. I'm on FW 2.0.2, in the US, on T-Mobile. Any help is appreciated. I'm pretty sure this one doesn't work. When I retore the phone and jailbreak it, am I supposed to check activate or no? It is activated right now, just wondering if it was supposed to be or not.

I'm pretty sure that those do not work at all. I've heard that the black ones kind of work. You should not have bought it. You should have bought a Universal SIM or TurboSIM with a programmer.

I was thinking the same thing. I restored the phone again, and unchecked activate and youtube. Enabled roaming too. it didn't work. Contacted the Ebay seller, we'll see what happens there. If all else fails, I lose 14 bucks and the seller gets a negative feedback.

This is totally off topic but, my posts are reading in reverse. My page 1 is actually the last posts of the thread, and they read upwards. How do I fix that?

I wonder if TurboSIM, the original, is better than Universal SIM and all other xSIM hardware wise. I'm not talking about the software loaded on any of the xSIMs. It seems to have a bigger chip, meaning it should be capable of a lot more things.

Unfortunately the TurboSIM kernel doesn't handle 3G commands (class 00) properly, so you won't be able to replicate what the other cards are doing in 3G mode. Should work as well/as bad as the others in 2G mode though with lamesaft or zeroG

Just updated my 3G to 2.1 and all is good! Updated to the new BB too.

At&t phone on T-Mobile USA universal-sim v5.00

Calls in/out = working
edge = working
Caller ID = working
SMS = working
GPS = working
3G = Its t-mobile.

Its been about a month now and its still going strong. It actually seems to get a better signal now. Before I would get only to bars in my living room now I get a full signal.
