Tutorial, Part 1: Downgrade factory 1.1.1, programm new Turbosim - works

I had to upload this in three parts, exceeded the limit of 10.000 chars, sorry for that.

Part I

I have my free 1.1.1-iPhone with Turbosim now. This tutorial is done on an Intel-Mac. I have iTunes 7.4.2 (4) installed on my Mac. It is done for ppl like me, needing a bit more information and steps then the pros do.

All the following is based on the work of the dev team and contributors from this form. I just recompiled the information and made it fit for my needs. I used many parts of the dev teams download instructions.

Saw so many posts with confusing content and questions. Besides using a 1.0.2-iPhone with Turbosim for couple weeks I just got a new factory 1.1.1-iPhone and do still have a brandnew Turbosim (unprogrammed).

The tutorial is covering how to downgrade the factory-new 1.1.1-iPhone to 1.0.2, activate it, programm the turbosim and use it with your private simcard. Then in part III how to upgarde to 1.1.1 a keep using your Turbosim/personal simcard.
I do NOT have any AT&T plan just an iPhone new and sealed, that comes with an unactivated AT&T simcard in the tray.

It works an shows that the updated 1.1.1 baseband still issues the same checks to the SIM which means that the applesaft TurboSim program is still sufficient plus that you can programm the Turbosim on the downgraded iPhone.

This does only work with a factory 1.1.1-iPhone, it DOES NOT work if you ever used any software unlock or fiddeled with the baseband.

1. Files you need (download them to your desktop)

2. Preparation

In your Home directory create a folder that will hold all files later (exept one). Choose a name, I have been choosing "free111" and will referr to this. Open that folder and create another one inside called "tools".

Doubleclick the downloaded 1.0.2 firmwarefile to extract the zip file. Open the folder (with the extracted files) and copy all the content into "free111". Delete the empty folder then from your desktop but keep the zip file.

Mount the iNdependence disk image and copy the program into "free111/tools". Unmount the Image and delete it from Desktop.

Doubleclick the Installer.app zipped file (make sure yiu downloaded version 3.1!) and copy the programm AppTapp Installer to "free111/tools". delete the zip file from the desktop.

Doubleclick turbo-cable-utils-iPhone-0.7.0-rev1.tar.gz. It will extract twice. Wait until you see a folder called turbo-cable-utils-iPhone-0.7.0-rev1 on your desktop. Copy the folder to "free111/tools". Delete the .gz and .tar archives from the desktop.

Doubleclick applesaft-0.92.tar.gz. It will extract twice. Wait until you see a folder called applesaft-0.92 on your desktop. Copy the folder to "free111/tools". Delete the .gz and .tar archives from the desktop.

You should have a FTP client installed anyway. Cyberduck is very good and free. Any other will do aswell, but make sure SFTP is supported. You should have the FTP client of your choice installed and sitting in your Program folder.

From all the above downloads only the zipped 1.0.2 firmware should be sitting on your desktop now.

3. Downgrade factory 1.1.1-iPhone to 1.0.2 firmware (the baseband will not be downgraded, thats ok)

Connect iPhone and Mac.

With the iPhone turned on, hold down the POWER and HOME buttons
simultaneously for ten seconds (until the screen goes dark). Then release
POWER while CONTINUING TO HOLD DOWN HOME for another 15 seconds.

While continue to hold HOME, launch iTunes. You should be prompted to
restore your iPhone. You can now release HOME.

You will be prompted to restore your iPhone. Hold down the
OPTION key and click RESTORE.

You will then be prompted with a file selection window allowing you to
select a firmware file. Select the zipped firmware file that is sitting on your desktop, and begin the restore.

After the restore is complete (takes 5 Minutes or so), you'll be told that the process failed (error 1013 or so), and the iPhone will be in recovery mode (another dialog). Your iphone shows the yellow triangle. Ignore all that, dont event hit any ok button, leave iTunes running.

Start AppTapp Installer from "free111/tools". The starting Installer will kill iTunes and shut it off. On the second AppTapp Installer screen you have to choose your firmware, choose 1.0.2 and continue. This will cause your phone to boot again, however the installation of Installer.app will fail (it's OK) and popup a dialog, hit the button "Abort".

4. Activate and Jailbreak the iPhone

Next step is to activate the iPhone with iNdependence. The programm always threw me a pairing error when I tried. If this happens to you, start iTunes and quit it after the iTunes programm window popps up.

Make sure iTunes is shut down. Make sure iTunes Helper is shut down. Check with Activity Monitor, the Apple software is in "Programms/Utilities". If the helper is runnig kill the process (kill imediately or so, I am on a German system)

Start iNdependence from "free111/tools" and hit "Activate Phone" in "Activation". iNdependence popps up a dialog where you have to point to the (unzipped) firmware. Point to your folder "free111" and hit ok. If iNdependence throws an error, quit the programm, restart it and redo the step "Activate Phone". This is more or less normal behavior. You should see a "success".

In iNdependence choose "Perform Jailbreak" in "Jailbreak". iNdependence popps up a dialog where you have to point to the (unzipped) firmware again. Point to your folder "free111" and hit ok. If iNdependence throws an error, quit the programm, restart it and redo the step "Perform Jailbreak". This is more or less normal behavior. You should see a "success".

You can leave the iPhone jailbroken and quit iNdependence for now.

PART II

5. Install the Installer App, BSD subsystem, open SSH, and the Turbosim software

The iPhone is activated now. Cause we dont want the iphone to shut of or fall into sleep mode while we do work on it plus needing to communicate from Terminal to iPhone via WLAN, we have to take some steps here. The iPhone may be connected to the Mac, thats no problem.

Press the Home button to let the screen pop up and "slide to unlock". You will probably see a message that the phone is activated and activation may take ..., just dismiss or ok that popup.

Goto Settings->General->Auto-Lock and tap "Never" instead of "1 Minute". You can set ths one back at the end of the tutorial.

Goto Settings->Wi-Fi and make the iPhone connect to your WLAN-Router. Two tipps: If possible set IP to static instead if DHCP. Otherwise - when later logging into via SSH or SFTP you have to check the IP again. For DNS choose OpenDNS server IP 208.67.222.222. Its a general tipp. The dns servers are fast and reliable.

Start AppTapp Installer from "free111/tools", chosse firware version 1.0.2 in the programms dialog and wait for the programm to do its job. Once finished you get an OK. You will find the new programm "Installer" on you iPhone. Start it and wait for the programm to list the sources. Then tap "Community Sources" and install them. After that choose "BSD Subsystem" and install it. After that choose "OpenSSH" and install it.

We could have used the SSH-Installation from iNdependence unstead for just programming the Turbosim. But if you want to do an upgrade to 1.1.1 later on you need BSD Subsystem/OpenSSH cause the iNdpendence installation is missing some commands.

Just in case you see mor popups on the iPhones screen saying AT&T activation may take a while, just dismiss and ignore.

For the following SSH- and SFTP-sessions I am using MY phones IP that is 192.168.1.228. Make sure to replace it with the IP you assigned to your iPhone before or check the IP on the phone if you use DHCP and use the leased one.

Fire up the program Terminal (Programms/Utilities) on your Mac. Type
ssh -l root 192.168.1.228
->sustitute 192.168.1.228 with your iPhones IP!!!

If you ever tried SSH on the iPhone before you may see a "Warning" in the terminals windows saying "Remote Host identification has changed". If so just type
sudo rm ~/.ssh/known_hosts
and retype
ssh -l root 192.168.1.228
The Terminal throws a message asking if you "trust" the computer you are going to connect to. Type
yes
cause the trusted computer is your iPhone. After a couple seconds the Terminal wants the root password for the iPhone. Type
dottie
and you will be logged in. Leave the Terminal windows open.

Fire up the FTP client of your choice (Cyberduck or so). Start a new connection and use your iPhones IP as the server (yes, mine is 192.168.1.228); for user type root; for password type dottie; Protocol is SFTP; Port is 22; path is /.
Connect to the iPhone and make sure you are at the top-directory.

In your FTP-client switch to "bin" (doubleclick bin). You should see a lot of stuff there most from BSD Subsystem. On your Mac open "free111/tools" and doubleclick "turbo-cable-utils..." to open the folder. Iside you see a folder called "bin-iPhone" open that folder. It contains a lot of files all starting with "turbo...".

Copy all the file to the directory bin on the iPhone. Just drag-and-drom em into the Windows. After upload scroll down in bin untill you see all files beginning with "turbo..:". Activate them all and hit command I for Information. A dialog popps up. All files have to be executable so choose 755 and hit ok.

Move up to the top-level in you FTP client and open "private" in there open "var" in there open "root". On the Mac in "free111/tools" open "applesaft-0.92" and then open the folder "bin" inside. Copy the file "applesaft.trb" from the Mac to the directory "root" you should have open in your FTP client.

You can disconnect the FTP ession and quit the client. No need to set rights for applesaft.trb.

6. Programm Turbosim

Your Terminal should still be open and connected to the iPhone. If not, start a new connection with
ssh -l root 192.168.1.228
->yep, again use your iPhone's IP

Now open the iPhones Simslot and take out the AT&t sim that was shipped with the iPhone. The iPhone popps up a dialog saying "no sim card", tap ok.

Cut up the your own SIM card (the one you wish to use with the iPhone) until it fits the TurboSIM nicely. It is ok to cut a tiny bit more so that they'll fit nicely. Repeat the above process with AT&T's SIM card.

In the Terminal type
launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
to deactivate the commcenter

Insert the AT&T-TurboSIM combination very gently into the iPhone. Be extra careful! The TurboSIM is notoriously brittle, and will crack if you use too much force! I ahve been very careful never broke any Turbosim but take your time

In the Terminal type
turbo-info
I got an error on my first try so I issued the command again and it worked. On success you will see some lines in the terminal ending with:
Kernel Version 1.2.7.0
Serial Number 1nv6-cc4ehotp9
OK. No Error
That step is done then. If you continue to get errors make sure the Turbosim/ATT combination fits really. Try until that one works.

In the Terminal type
turbo-app /private/var/root/applesaft.trb
On success you should see some lines in the Terminal again ending like
SIZE 2021
initializing modem
modem initiated
OK. No Error

You are done with programming the Turbosim but have to re-enable the commcenter. In the Terminal type
launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist

Shut off the iPhone now (Hold the START button for 3-5 seconds until you see the red slider to shut off). Use the slider to shut off and wait the phone for doing so. Then press the START button to start the phone again.

On the iPhone goto "Settings->Phone". You will see a new option called "SIM Applikations". Tap it. In the following dialog you will thensee "AppleSaft". Tap on it. (If you see more instances of "AppleSaft" tap on the one at the top). In the following dialog tap "Set", you will see another dialog showing ICCID and IMEI of you iPhone. Tap the button "Accept" there. You will be redirected to the dialog before. The option "set" should be active now. Tap the button "Back" on the top left side of the screen. Press the HOME button then.

Open the simtray. Remove the AT&T-TurboSIM combination (gently), and insert your own SIM-TurboSIM combination (again, gently). Once the simtray is in a dialog will popup and ask for your pin (the one that is associated to your private sim).
Type in the pin and your iPhone will log in and use your carrier and simcard.

Congrats, you are done!!!

You have a working iPhone with 1.0.2 (still 1.1.1 baseband) with Turbosim.

Continue to PART III covering how to upgrade to 1.1.1, activate and use Turbosim with the free phone.

PART III

In the last part you wanna upgrade the working iPhone to 1.1.1, then activate the iPhone and use it with your Turbosim.
You should have done Part I+II or at least have been reading it, downloaded and installed the software mentioned there.
AGAIN: THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR IPHONES THAT HAVE BEEN UNLOCKED WITH SOFTWARE BEFORE.

Status of your iPhone is: It's downgraded from factory 1.1.1-iPhone to 1.0.2 firmware (1.1.1 baseband still there not downgraded), plus you got Turbosim programmed and working with the iPhone. You are working on an Intel-Mac and have iTunes 7.4.2 (4) installed.

1. Additional files you need (download them to your desktop; the ones mentioned in PART I should be there aswell)

2. Preparation

You have installed the folder structure mentioned in PART I

Doubleclick iASign-v0.2.tar.bz2. It will extract twice. Wait until you see a folder called iAsign on your desktop. Copy the folder to "free111/tools". Delete the .bz2 and .tar archives from the desktop.

Doubleclick iPhone_SSH_Install_for_Mac.zip. Wait until you see a folder called iPhone SSH Install for Mac on your desktop, rename folder to iPhoneSSH (easier for later Terminal jobs). Copy the folder to "free111/tools". Delete the .zip archive from the desktop.

Doubleclick BSD_Base-2.0.tar.gz. It will extract twice. Wait until you see a folder called BSD_Base on your desktop. Copy the folder to "free111/tools". Delete the .gz and .tar archives from the desktop.

BSD_Extra-2.0.tar.gz. It will extract twice. Wait until you see a folder called BSD_Extra on your desktop. Copy the folder to "free111/tools". Delete the .gz and .tar archives from the desktop.

Doubleclick 1.1.1-jailbreak.zip. Wait until you see a folder called 1.1.1-jailbreak on your desktop, rename folder to 111jailbreak (easier for later Terminal jobs). Copy the folder to "free111/tools". Delete the .zip archive from the desktop.

3. Prepare iPhone for jailbroken update

FIRST OF ALL: Open the simtray and remove the Turbosim/your simcard combo and insert the AT&T card that came with the iPhone.

Connect the iPhone to iTunes! It is critical that iTunes already recognize your phone and that you have the "update" button available to you BEFORE making the changes below. This is because executing the steps below will otherwise cause iTunes to go into recovery mode, which will NOT WORK with this jailbreak. Open iTunes, and if you have a "Check for Updates" button, click it. You will be prompted to upgrade to 1.1.1. Tell iTunes to "Download Only"; DO NOT click "Download and Install".

Just in case you synced the iPhone before, iTunes will offer to restore the (data) backup (notes, preferences etc) or cofigure as a new iPhone. Choose configure as a new iPhone and dont let iTunes do syncing. You will see the mentioned UPDATE button then and iTunes will aks if the Update shall be loaded. Choose yes (just load, not install!!)

Once you see the "update" button, DONT CLICK IT, but continue. iTunes must be running!!

While still connected to iTunes, SSH into your iPhone while still at version 1.0.2, type

ssh -l root 192.168.1.228
(replace Ip number with the one you use on your iPhone)

Type
mv /var/root/Media /var/root/Media.old
then
ln -s / /var/root/Media
and then
ls -al

Your Media folders should now look like this:

lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 1 Oct 10 12:06 Media -> /
drwxr-x--- 7 root wheel 272 Oct 10 10:51 Media.old

We do need a copy of the existing lockdownd binary in var/root, so type
cp /usr/libexec/lockdownd /var/root/lockdownd.1.0.2

4. Performing a Software-Update and force read-write-mode

You are ready to perform an update to 1.1.1. This MUST BE DONE WITH THE UPDATE BUTTON, and NOT the restore button. The update process preserves your /private/var partition, while the restore blows it away.

Click the UPDATE button in iTunes, and upgrade to 1.1.1

As soon as iTunes is ready updating quit iTunes and quit iTunes Helper (if running). If you've followed the steps properly, your iPhone should now be jailbroken, but not yet writable.

In Terminal type

cd free111/tools/111jailbreak/
then type
./iphuc-jailbreak.osx

You should now be connected to your iPhone via iPhuk. Test this by typing
ls -al
in the Terminal, and make sure you see 'dev' among the list of directories.

Still in iPhuk with the Terminal we are now going to overwrite part of the disk partition with our payload using the 2K file included in this distribution called rdisk0s1.
In the Terminal (running iPhuk) type
putjailbreak rdisk0s1 /dev/rdisk0s1

The upload should be relatively quick. Once finished, reboot your iPhone (Hold HOME and START button and keep holding until the Apple logo appears, let go both buttons and give the reboot 2-4 minutes.

5. Installing SSH and BSD

The Terminal connection to the iPhone is closed (cause of the reboot) so close that Terminal window and open a new one. To install SSH you have to run a script that comes with the distribution.
In Terminal type
cd free111/tools/iPhoneSSH/
then type
sh iPhoneMacSSHInstall.sh

The instllation starts. Watch the Terminal you have to shut down and restart the iPhone twiche during the install. For than hold the START button until the red slide shows up, slide to shut down. After that press START button again to start. Terminal will inform you what to do.
At the end of the installation you are asked if you wanna stay jailbroken. Cause we want that hit ctrl-C on the keyboard.

The new root password for v1.1.1 is 'alpine', once it's finished:

ssh -l root 192.168.1.228
(again, use your iPhones IP)

Your SSH keys are likely to change, so if you get any errors about an incorrect key, type in Terminal

rm -f ~/.ssh/known_hosts
and then
ssh -l root 192.168.1.228
Again the question if you trust the computer you are going to connect to, type
yes
then upon asked by the terminal type the new root password
alpine

Once you're in, you will also want to install the BSD world. NerveGas has built a new version of the BSD subsystem that doesn't require libarmfp.
To install type

cd free111/tools/BSD_Base/
then type
scp -r * root@192.168.1.228:/
then after the software is installed we aswell want the extras, so type
cd ../BSD_Extra
and then
scp -r * root@192.168.1.228:/

6. Activating and using Turbosim with your private simcard

To activate with Turbosim, we'll need to copy over that lockdownd binary and activation certification we backed up when we were on v1.0.2 and do a little hackery, then copy the v1.1.1 lockdownd back when we're done.
Do not reboot the phone during this process, you have to start all over if!!!

Open a Terminal and ssh into the iPhone with
ssh -l root 192.168.1.228
(the password is alpine)

To back up v1.1.1's lockdownd type
cp /usr/libexec/lockdownd /var/root/lockdownd.1.1.1

To overwrite the iPhone's copy with your old v1.0.2 copy, type
cp /var/root/lockdownd.1.0.2 /usr/libexec/lockdownd

Open a new Terminal but leave the one that is logged into the iPhone open (I call this one phone-terminal)

In the new Terminal type
cd free111/tools/111jailbreak/
then type
scp iPhoneActivation.pem root@192.168.1.228:/System/Library/Lockdown/
to upload the file that comes with the distribution you have downloaded

Leave that Terminal open but switch to the "phone" Terminal and type
killall lockdownd
This will restart lockdownd with v1.0.2's version

Open a new Terminal and type
cp free111/tools/1.1.1-jailbreak/iPhoneActivation.pem free111/tools/iASign/bin/
next type
cd free111/tools/iASign/bin/
to chenge directory, then type
./iASign.mac --automatic iPhoneActivation_private.pem

After a while, it should complete and say "New State: Activated" in the last line.

Now go bach to the "phone" Terminal (the one that is SSH-logged into the iPhone) and type
cp /var/root/lockdownd.1.1.1 /usr/libexec/lockdownd
then type
killall lockdownd

The tutorial from the dev team shows one more step but that one ruined always my installation. There is even a comment that the step can be skipped - I agree!

Before you can sync with iTunes, you will need to remove the symlink you created, so type
rm /var/root/Media
and
mv /var/root/Media.old /var/root/Media

Switch the iPhone off and start it again. It is free now and can be used as an Super-iPod. Remove the simtray, take out the AT&T simcard and put in the turbosim/your privatesim combo. Insert, type in your pin and enjoy the free 1.1.1-iPhone with Turbosim

There is a lot to do from now like, YouTub activation, international keyboard that is in 1.1.1 but disabled, install software aso.
I'll put some stuff together soon, but you will find all you need already in the forum. here

i think people who don't know what the terminal commands do should be very careful with where the 'spaces' should be because they're a bit hard to notice if you don't know what you're doing ... and change the root password!!1!

I would recommend to copy the terminal commands from the webbrowser to Textedit first, save it as a text file and then copy from Textedit to terminal. this way you dont miss spaces. Alle the commands are taken from terminal, I wanted to make sure to have all spaces in.

I use UIctl and switch off the ssh server so it does not matter. but you are rigt, changing the root pwd is always a ggod idea.

Thank you for you detailed step by step manual. I've got a brand new 1.1.1 iPhone next to me, can't wait until next wednesday - the day my turbosim will arrive.

Did any problem occure by using the phone for the last 2 days?

You are from germany, right? I'm from switzerland, so have you installed a german languagepack? Have you tried to disable the english-wirte correction? Any problems with it?

You've got no page where you've wrote down your manuals in german?

Has someone else experience with this method?

Would it be a problem by doing it wit a ppc mac? Or it ist possible to prepare the iPhone this way with an intel (at a friend of mine) and using it afterward with a ppc (G4 Powerbook)?

Why update to 1.1.1 in part 3? Isn't the phone running total after part2? Just because it`s possible

?

No problems at all. Meanwhile I enabled the international keyboards, installed some applications including installer.app. Enabled YouTube, use iTunes WiFi look and buy, re-installed an sftp-server for easier access aso.
Did several shut down and restart, several reboot, synced forth and back and so on. Works like a charm

Yep, I am from Germany. I have enabled Apples international keyboards. Gives you all the keyboards (even multi-keyboard) you want plus (in my case) german auto-correction. With Regions the number-format-problem is solved, date format good aso.
There is no german language pack so far and i will not install one, just wait for Apple. They have to have it at least on nov 9th. Until then i can live with the english version.

I saw its @ anyone but let me give an answer aswell. 1.1.1 is soooooo cool I had to do it. The keyboard, german auto-correction, Regions alone make it worth.
But it will only take a few days until tools like an upgraded version of iNdependence will make the work less terminal-ly ;-)

thanks for your immediate answer. English is no real probelm for me, I was just curious. But my terminal skills are a bit - ähmm

Are you sure that there'll be an independence update sometime (soon)? I've read nothing for a long time about this intentions. Everyone started to downgrade (FW and Baseband) and tried to handle the 1.1.1 update in this way.

Are you sure that there'll be an independence update sometime (soon)? I've read nothing for a long time about this intentions. Everyone started to downgrade (FW and Baseband) and tried to handle the 1.1.1 update in this way.

Well, I am not born with a terminal aswell. the hardest part for me was to cut and fit the sim/turbosim. i am 6"5 and more made for sledgehammer than for tiny cutter and simcard ;-)
If you do it step by step, it will work for you.
i have just been checking the independence projectpage that says they are working on it...
the turbosim programming has to be done anyway. send me a pm if you get stucked

Your manual needs a update.

I hope this will make terminal things easier for me. But still a downgrade to firmware 1.0.2 is needet.

I`ll wait for others to experience...
