I've been testing this method for awhile to determine if it was possible to boot the x86_64 kernel on the Macbook Air via any process. It looks like it is.

References here and here show it is possible to force boot the x86_64 kernel if you have a 64bit EFI firmware.

Theory is fine, but for now I haven't been successful.

There are several relevant parts such as:

Quote:

Model (with 64-bit EFI) Byte Position in boot64.efi Old Value New Value
Mac mini(Eary 2009)　0×266DB 0×00 0×80
MacBook Air(Late 2008)　0×266FB 0×00 0×80
iMac(early 2008) 0×2671B 0×08 0×80

included in the comments at this page, but so far I'm stuck.

As an alternate method I attempted to use lipo to modify the mach_kernel to only contain the x86_64 kernel information. A reboot confirms this didn't work so well. :)

Interesting notes so far from the EFI modification tests:

1) bless --info works fine on 10.6.0, but gives a Can't access "efi-boot-device" NVRAM variable on 10.6.2.

2) You can still modify which efi file is used for boot in 10.6.2 (I fouled one up in a hex editor and rebooted to see if it would fail just to test it), but the bless binary will not show the information the system is configured with.

3) The information at both links above for modifying the boot.efi doesn't seem to work in 10.6.0. It already wasn't working in 10.6.2, but there were some comments about it working in previous versions of Snow Leopard so I went back to an unpatched vanilla install from my install media (used Disk Utility to format the drive before installation) to test it.

Does anyone have experience with this? :)

Hi Guy's,

I have a 15" Mac Book Pro with 10.6.2 which keeps freezing from the first day I bought it. It has been 5 times for repair by now ( 2 mother board replaced, 1 time monitor, ..... ). I am totally annoyed as it happens about 10 times a day that there is a hard switch off required.

My local Apple shop has no idea what to do anymore which had the result that I had to buy a Thinkpad T500 to work with :-(.

Does anyone had similar problems and a idea what to do !?!

Hi,

I bought a Macbook Pro off ebay, and i think the charger is on the way out. I have checked the serial number against applecare's warranty check and it says its valid until June 2010.

https://selfsolve.apple.com/ :pie:

The battery Time / Percent is up and down like a yoyo, and the charge is making a sizzling noise

Do you reckon i could call apple and get it replaced, or is the warranty only with the person who 1st bought it?

Cheers

Hello,

first I would to apologize for my bad english...
There is my problem : I have a macbook mid 2007 with broken display and maybe other bad issues (fan, sensor, superdrive,...) ????
the macbook goes on and boot and I can use an external display, but I would to run AHT on it for testing the machine and when I boot in target disk mode (the superdrive is KO) with the "D" key I don't see anything on external display even in clamshell mode, I think because I boot with the AHT on DVD an this is a "basic" system.
My question : it is possible to modify the EFI for than the macbook boot the external display like the main screen or it is possible to modify the AHT for booting on external display
thanks for your answers...

So here's my story. I recently bought a used late 2008 aluminum macbook 2.4 ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb ram, nvidia 9400m etc etc. I failed to ask the owner to include the original leopard dvd that came with the macbook in the transaction. i realized this a month after the purchase and cannot contact the owner. he ignores phone calls. So now i must call apple for replacement dvds. I had a bad experience with an iphone that i once purchase used and turned out to be stolen and was eventually tracked to me. ( that issue was resolved haha). I am just wary with these sorts of things now. Is there a way to check with a serial number if a certain macbook was reported stolen to apple? because i would rather not get in trouble when ordering replacement discs from apple with my credit card! Or am i worrying too much?

hey all,
so here is my story :)

I had my macbook pro in sleep mode for few hours, when i tried to wake it up the screen didn't turn on ,
so i tried
1) press F2, won't help
2) force shutdown, and restart but the screen just won't turn on even at the beginning of the boot
3) reset smc, shutdown disconnect from power sources and hold power button for 5 secs
4) reset pram, pressing cmd, opt, p, and r
5) plug it to an external screen, but the other screen was black too !!!

now i am sure that the problem is only from the lcd since i can hear the fans working, the hd, and the speakers when i higher or lower the volume.

any suggestions? please help out
thanks
