Hello friend. I am also totally new to all this mac stuff, but I think I can give U, few tips where to start. NOTE: this is for leopard 10.5.7 NOT Snow Leopard!!!
For snow leo it can get a bit trickier.

I have managed to install it to my pc, solo install without windows on the same hdd, and now I am trying to install it dual-boot on my lap top with win7.

For start, download iAtkos v7 installation image and burn it to a dvd. As I have learned it is the most flexible and easiest to install.

Second, find out a detailed specifications of your lap top. You need to know exactly which processor is in it, chipset, ide/sata controllers, sound chip, lan chip, w-lan (ethernet) chip, graphic card. You can probably get all of this info on HP's site, user manual that came with lap top or some other site that did a review of it.

    Default Mac Os X Leopard

The easiest is using Leopard 10.5 instead of SL 10.6 due to SL 10.6 only support GUID instead of MBR. Win 7 could not recognize the GUID.
