Which version to install?
I have;
AMD PhenomII X4 920 2.8GhZ
Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P
2x2gb OCZ 1066 MhZ Memory
ATI Radeon HD4850 1gb (XFX)
Which distro for me to use, and if possible a name of the site I should search it from?

Try swapping out your IDE optical drive for a sata or use a IDE-> SATA converter. Alternatively, try Lawless 10.5.4; it's the only install I could get working from the internal drive (my system is similar to yours).
That having been said, I could never get the Netkas Radeon 4850 drivers to work with Lawless; ended up installing iDeneb off a USB dvd drive and its all good now.
