Question iATKOS 7 installed / iATKOS S3 v2 wont boot!!!

    Hey people,

Trying to get my system up and running as my wifes Mac is not cut out for video editing!!!

    System specs
    -----------------------------
    Alienware Aurora system
9gig ram - only use 2gig when installing OSX
    i7 - 920 cpu
    x58 chipset
    ATI 5780
sata 320 gig 2.5 HDD used for OSX install
Multicard reader - could this be causing the 0x3d error?

So i have managed to finally get iATKOS 7 running, it always installed perfect just got hung at the "using 10485 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers" error. So i fixed that error by moving around some kexts and it booted up first hit and im in OSX with no issues, just bare bones install for now as all i wanted to do was see if my system could run OSX.

But with my system specs i was thinking iATKOS S3 v2 would be much better suited on my machine, am i correct in thinking that? Problem is i cant boot up the install. The install just gives me a "5 second time out 0x3d error" and wont boot into the install. I got the same error with iATKOS 7 install but it just continued past it after attempting to fix the problem then booted into the install.

Now i can launch iATKOS S3 v2 from within OSX iATKOS 7 and it will allow me to install it on a GUID partition. Should i modify iATKOS 7 to run on my machine with all my hardware or should i be taking the iATKOS S3 v2 route and would that better suit my setup?

    Thanks for you help guys!

    1. OSX can be installed on both GUID and MBR.
    2. For i7 CPU, you would need boot option to boot the installer.
    3. And Leopard won't have full support, SL need to be updated to 10.6.4.
So, V7 (or other Leopard distros) would not serve you much at all.
    4. Since you already have V7 running, whatever way you could install SL would be fine, whether it's S3 or retail DVD/image.

EDIT: your hdd is a 2.5? what interface, USB/SATA?

    Hey mate,

Thanks for your reply its SATA, and its currently setup as OSX and Windows install so the drive has not been re-formated to GUID or MBR it still has NTSF partitions on it. This drive was used as a test to see if OSX could run on my machine. I have ordered a new 3.5 1TB SATA driver for my S3 v2 OSX install and it will be formated to GUID for a clean S3 v2 setup which i will install via my current v7 OSX install on my test drive. I will run Windows and OSX on separate HDD's.

I have also tried to boot S3 v2 with boot options such as, cpus=1 and busratio=20, even different kernels such as mach_atom etc all with no success it just hangs then stops at the 0x3d error something to do with USB. OSX v7 also hanged on that error then just ignored it and booted into the install, no such luck with S3 v2, but the fix for that will be installing it within the current running v7 OSX.

Another question if you dont mind, my graphics card is a ATI 5870, no special after market one just straight from ATI. Will it be safe to say i can just add the kexts for the GPU and away i go, i wont have to flash my card?

    Thanks again for your help!

    UPDATE

Ok i can only boot in iATKOS 7 in safe mode as it would seem.
Anyway i booted into safe mode then installed iATKOS S3 v2 which went well but then when my PC restarts it just boots to a black dos screen basically.

I then restart and load my iATKOS 7 chameleon bootloader from my 1st HDD and it shows my iATKOS 7 install along with my new iATKOS S3 v2 SL install on my 2nd hard drive but when i select it and hit enter it does not start it up. The selected icon in chameleon just moves back to the center of the icons and continues to wait for me to select something. I can select iATKOS 7 and boot into safe mode but it wont boot iATKOS S3 v2 i just highlight it in the bootloader hit enter and it wont start it up.

Any ideas? I have installed iATKOS S3 v2 three times now with different setups and still same thing, black screen which wont go to the S3 v2 bootloader on reboot and no start up from chameleon bootloader from my iATKOS 7 install on my first HDD.

I then unplugged my 1st HDD and just tried to boot off my 2nd HDD with the iATKOS S3 v2 install and no luck, just black screen with flashing cursor in dos, no bootloader nothing, its like there is no OS installed but my 1st HDD with iATKOS 7 chameleon bootloader shows me there is.

    Thanks guys

That is strange. But it means no Chameleon installed or no OS system files.
You could download Chameleon itself and manually install it Onto the partition. The basic (no mod) RC4 version seems to be best.
    Kexts.com should have it.
As for your video card, netkas.org should have installation instruction for it.
    Keep us posted.

    EDIT:
As for your earlier post (the forum servers have problems and won't let me reply)
    1. You can try set your BIOS, disable all legacy USB, disable USB keyboard/mouse and enable USB advance features.
    2. Don't forget to use boot options. Your best ones would be

    -x -v busratio=20 (and/or cpus=4,8)

    See how it goes.

Yep thats what i was thinking, its just blinking at me like it has nothing on there. I checked the drive to see if files were on there, there were about about 300 or so after the install but im guessing it was not installed correct.

Do i install the Chameleon onto the partition that already has the new iATKOS S3 v2 install then try to boot to the OSX install? Will the Chameleon fix the partition and allow it to find my OSX install? Or do you mean i install Chameleon onto the partition then try to boot to the iATKOS S3 v2 installer from the bootloader? Doing this last time just gave me the 0x3d error which ended up never allowing me into the setup screen. And i did try many boot options all with the same 0x3d error, iATKOS 7 gave me the same error on install and boot up into safe mode but just ignores it and continues loading.

I believe the iATKOS 7 Chameleon bootloader on my 1st HDD is just finding my 2 GUID partitions on my 2nd HDD not the actual OSX on the GUID partitions hence why when i select the GUID partition with S3 v2 on it it just does not take any action and wont boot onto it, like there is no OS on there.

Do i have to do anything with RAID since im booting into my 1st HDD iATKOS 7 OSX and installing it onto my 2nd HDD?
When iATKOS S3 v2 is running i will no longer be using my 1st HDD i will be replacing it with my normal Windows 7 HDD.

    1. 300 files is not correct for 6+ GB installation.
    2. V7 Chameleon would not be the V2 RC4.
    3. You do install Chameleon onto your S3 SL hdd volume/partition.
    4. Disable your RAID as you would use the hdd's separately.
    5. Once you're through installation successfully, then MOSTLY SL should run IF you select your customization CORRECTLY.
So take the minimal approach: basic install, no video, network, audio, etc..since you would need to install drivers/kexts for them later anyway.

Ok thanks mate, will try the install again and see how i go!
Also might note, the install says it will take 18 minutes then jumps to 5 hours then in a couple mintues its 90% done then goes straight to 100% so all in all it takes under 5 minutes which seems a little to quick for me, may even try a vanilla version of snow leopard that i got from work.
