Default Dev os for the iphone

I just got my iphone 3g and am loving it, but i want to make apps for it so i did a bit of googleing and found the SDK is only for mac's :O

Anyway i dont want to pay for a new computer since i just bought one so im trying to get a mac running on a virtual machine. Is this at all posiable? or is it just easyer to dual boot?

Also iv read a few post in this sub section and yes this is another one, which distro for my pc ... sorry if theres some sort of guide some where but i didnt find it.

    Intel E8400 3.00ghz
    2gb ddr2 800mhz
    ati 4850 512mb
    asus P5Q pro

Iv also tryed a vmware image but it wouldnt boot, same with virtualbox. Also downloaded iDeneb v1.4 OSx86 and wont boot on either (cant get to install just hangs on mac screen or crashes).

Edit: I also have a netbook Asus N10j atom processor, 9300m gs if a mac would run on that it would be good

Well the BIOS MOD its to get all cores working, if you go for retail, dont need MOD, just need to make DSDT Patch, surely you'll read about this in some guide for retail, about the vmware, I dont think retail will work there, but you can try with a distro like kalyway or ideneb, or even try OSX Live, check Pcwiz page for more info

yeah, retail does not work with vmware. I tried several times but that did not work.
FWIW, retail installation + xcode works outside the VM environment.
