So, my friends has a iphone 3G unlocked and jailbroken (version 3.0 (7A341) - modem firm 04.26.08) and wants to update the software, but obv still keep it jailbroken and unlocked....what's our best plan? (we are both windows) we don't need to go to to 4.0 just newer than 3.0....any advice?

Well, you being on windows limits your options a bit.
My personal opinion is that it is best to try and keep your baseband at 04.26.08 even though this means taking a few extra steps in the upgrade process.

Does your friend want to keep his existing data (SMS history, game hiscores etc)?

Well. The guide I would recommend for you is designed for mac users.

    You have a few options:

    Option 1:
    Restore to 3.1.3, jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.2 or 0.9.4, unlock with ultrasn0w
con - update baseband to 05.12.01
    pro - simplest approach

    Option 2:
Find a mac and use pwnagetool 3.1.5 to make a custom IPSW, restore that, unlock with ultrasn0w
pro - you keep your baseband, much less risk of screwing things up.
con - you are a windows user, so you need to find a mac or set up OS X in a virtual machine.

    Option 3:
Use the "last ditch" method to restore to 3.1.3, jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.2 or 0.9.4, unlock with ultrasn0w
    con - more advanced
pro - keep baseband, process works on windows (so you don't need a mac)

sn0wbreeze will probably work, but we will never recommend this here (as it is too unreliable)

well your in luck :-) you can download sn0wbreeze 2.2 for windows.. it allows you to create your own custom firmware, and keep your baseband.. and then you can use ultrasn0w to unlock with cydia.. go to yahoo and do a search on sn0wbreeze 2.2, there should be a link that has ih8tsn0w or something in it..i was using redsn0ws method on baseband 6.15 or w.e and my iphone got stuck in a loop.. i then downloaded the original 4.2.1 ispw, used snowbreeze 2.2 and made a custom ispw.. then it flashed it and everything to the iphone.. now i have untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak on baseband 6.15 and unlocked with cydia and ultrasn0w.. everything is working great now!

This is bad advice. Did you actually read what the original poster was asking for?

They don't want to update to iOS 4, so why are you talking about this?

Also, we have no section for sn0wbreeze, there is a good reason for this. Sn0wbreeze is not supported or recommended here on hackints0sh.
An older version of sn0wbreeze *might* work, however we don't recommend this.

Quick answer to your question is to do a search on these forums for sn0wbreeze and look at how many users are posting impossible to troubleshoot problems that are directly related to the jailbreak after having used the tools. No one is contesting that it's possible for these tools to work, the concern that I have (and that most of the other moderators share) is that you're playing russian roulette with your device -- sure, it may be fine and you may have no problems with it -- but you also could be that one person whose phone gets completely screwed by it and will spend hours trying to figure out what the problem is, only to find out it has something to do with the jailbreak.

Admittedly the tools have gotten much more reliable, stable, and robust in the past few years -- but the reason we trust and stick with the dev-team is because they consistently provide reliable software that acts as intended -- the sn0wbreeze team just copies their work and ports it (sometimes very poorly) to other operating systems.

I appreciate very much their contribution to the team, and their tools and work is to be respected and appreciated -- but ultimately, if it was my phone, my device, my money on the line -- I'd stick with the dev-team. That's just our recommendation, and that's why we don't support sn0wbreeze.

From experience, giving more options just confuses some of the people who are new to the forum here. So unless what they want to do is not going to work, I generally try and limit myself to answering their question.

There are documented performance issues with the 3G and iOS 4.x, how bad this actually is - that seems to vary, some users notice this more than others. I've played with a 3G running iOS 4.0.2 and it was glacially slow until I tweaked the spotlight indexing. Supposedly 4.2.1 has fixed many of these issues, but the safest option is to stick with 3.1.3 as the original poster asked.
