Looking Clarification on 3Gs Jailbreak

First of all thanks for looking and this being my first post here, hello from Canada. Someone told me about this site in order to clarify some questions about jailbreaking and unlocking an iPhone.

So I just bought an iPhone 3GS after using an jailbroken iPhone 3G for awhile. It is currently has 3.1 firmware, baseband 05.11.07, jailbroken and unlocked with the old iBoot. I have also saved my SSHs on cydia. When I was searching around information, I got very confused with all the different things concerning iPhone 3Gs.

First of all, I want to update it to at least 3.1.2 because I'm getting that weird thing where it won't wake up sometimes. In jailbreaking a few of my friends phones prior to the release of 3.1.3, I just used Blackra1n at 3.1.2 for their 3Gs. But, when I was reading on the internet I read that Apple stopped signing 3.1.2; what exactly does that mean?

If I downloaded the 3.1.2 firmware off of the felixbruns website will it not work when I try to restore it out of DFU mode?

If not what solutions are there in updating this phone to 3.1.2? Does it work for me to create a Custom ISPW in PwnageTools?

Sorry if these questions seem pretty amateurish but I guess I wanted to clarify everything before I try anything. I thought I new most about jailbreaking phones as I have done it before with my 3G but it seems that the 3Gs is way different (or at least to me).

Only custom ipsw or restoring original with backed up shsh will work.

I reccommend custom ipsw

Thanks for the quick response!

So just to clarify, I make a Custom ISPW for 3.1.2 in PwnageTools 3.1.5.
I put my iPhone in DFU mode and pressing shift restore, update from that custom ISPW.

Just in case I changed my host to the cydia server just in case this doesn't work.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just really paranoid as I need the unlock on this one to use it!

Yes Pwnagetool 3.1.5 is fine but 3.1.4 will also work. (Pwnagetool 3.15 works for iPhone OS 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. Pwnagetool 3.1.4 works for iPhone OS 3.1.2)

No don't use DFU mode (DFU mode on a 3GS will only accept original Apple IPSW with a valid SHSH), simply option/alt-click on restore button (it is shift-click restore on windows) in iTunes, navigate to the custom IPSW you made and restore that.

ok, ha last thing before I go do this. Is there any more inherent risk in updating to 3.1.3 (I do need an unlock and I have baseband 05,11,07 and redsnow was used at 3.1) through pwnage tool? If not I was thinking I may as well just update to that and avoid the risk of me accidently clicking the update button in iTunes

You can turn off the check for updates option in iTunes.

3.1.3 has less support from the jailbreaking community, some patches are only available for 3.1.2 and not for 3.1 or 3.1.3

One great example is blacksn0w does not work for 3.1.3 (even though with pwnagetool you will still have 05.11.07 baseband) this is because CommCenter is updated in 3.1.3 and geohot has no plans to release an updated blacksn0w for 3.1.3

Summary - stay with 3.1.2

Thanks for the help, everything worked great for a few days, now out of the blue I have a serious problem!

So created a restore with PwnageTools, updated it using Option Restore, installed blackra1n and everything was working perfect. I could turn it on and off and everything would load fine.

Suddenly today when I was having problems with my 3Gs data, I hit the Reset Network Settings in the Settings menu and suddenly my phone won't turn on. It goes to the Apple logo for awhile and then the screen goes black, and when you hit the Home button it just reloads the Apple logo. I put it in DFU mode and I still have the iBoot 359.3 according to Device Manager. I am really not sure what happened! I put it in recovery mode and restored it and it is still doing it!

Any ideas or anyone heard of this problem? I really don't want to take my phone to the Apple store just in case I get a new one with the new iBoot!
