iphone 3GS stuck at boot logo; earlier jbked using blackra1n and unlocked

my OS ver was 3.1 and baseband was 5.1.07.
added later: i think i managed to put the phone in DFU mode. bootrom using system profiler shows up as 359.3.
phone was purchased in nov 09.

i had to do tethered reboot each time i needed to reboot.
today it seemed to just hang and then is now stuck at the apple logo.

i have searched but no authoritative suggestion on what to do.
based on what i have found so far, it seems i can create a custom 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 ipsw using pwnage tool and put the phone in DFU mode and load that custom ipsw.

pl do advice as to whether i can get my phone back...

tried this after your message.
now the phone is stuck on the face (geohot face?).

tried it once. stuck on the face.
put the phone in recovery mode again and tried it again.
again stuck on the face.
any other ideas?

should i try to create a custom ipsw using pwnage and then restore (after putting phone in DFU mode?)

I finally tried the 3.1.2 custom FW. it did not work in DFU mode but it worked in recovery mode.
So now I need to unlock 3.1.2.

any advice on what is most robust unlock for 3.1.2 will be greatly appreciated.

I did this. And "No Service" with AT&T sim and neither with another sim.
Given that this did not work, tried Ultrasn0w. That did not work either - same situation "No service".
BAsically it said - "Waiting for activation. It may take some time" and then did not work at all.

I removed the unlock from Cydia. Restarted. AT&T now works. External sim does not - which I also need because of frequent travel.

One other perhaps relevant tit-bit - Now I do not need to do tethered reboots as I had to when I had JBked using Blackra1n. Earlier I had virgin 3.1 and now I have Pwnage 3.1.2.

Unless there is another unlock approach to try, maybe I should try putting virgin 3.1 or 3.1.2 and then try Blackra1n and Blacksn0w RC2. Not sure if iTunes will allow me to restore to 3.1.2 - since it allowed me to restore to custom-3.1.2 from recovery mode, i am hoping that it will allow me to load virgin 3.1.2 also using recovery mode. Thoughts?

Once again (for your reference) - i have iPhone 3GS. Pwnage created 3.1.2. Bootrom 359.3. Baseband Modem firmware 05.11.07. AT&T settings are AT&T 5.6.
