okay so i basically got an iphone but i dont have any sim cards at all
its a 3gs with white back with 16 gb and the science thing on the side
i really would like to use it as an i touch not as a phone.
i saw many tutorials and have tried may different things. black rain, red snow, you name it.
yet im still here making this tread. please help. how do i turn my iphone into an itouch?
If all you want to do is use it as an ipod touch, find out what version of iOS you want to end up on (restoring requires SHSH for the 3GS, don't forget) and then use the equivalent version of redsn0w to jailbreak and hacktivate it. You must have a version that supports hacktivation, as that's what breaks it out of the 'connect to iTunes to restore' screen.
If you don't know what an SHSH is, it's time to get your research cap on and do some homework. You'll need to know what SHSH you have on file with Cydia or have on file locally, and these will determine what version of iOS you can upgrade to.
It's also worth mention that redsn0w is VERY version specific. For example, 0.9.3 does not jailbreak the same things as 0.9.4 and so on. Because of this, you need the version of redsn0w specific to the version of iOS you're trying to jailbreak. Other versions will not work, at best they'll bootloop your phone.

how do i find out what OS i am?
i used i tuned to restore/update it. just today.
You can use TinyUmbrella to determine the current running version of iOS on the device.

edit3: okay i jail broke it and stuff
but i still get the "no sim card installed screen" on tethered reboot.
every time i use "just boot"
it says "exploiting with limer4in and then the phone reboots.
Are you choosing to hacktivate in redsn0w? The latest version should be capable of hacktivating 5.0.1. Worst case, I am certain that the latest version of sn0wbreeze can create a pre-hacktivated custom .ipsw, but I wouldn't recommend that unless it's the absolute last ditch method. You should be able to choose to hacktivate 5.0.1 with the latest version of either tool, and that should kick you past the no sim card installed error.
um.. i checked the "deactivate" checkbox in the redsn0w jailbreak section.
yet i still hit the "no sim" interface.
how do u go past that pesky screen? i see alot of guides with "SAM" but theres never download links for "SAM" what is that? and how do u hactivate with rensn0w

Deactivate is the exact opposite of what you want. You want it to hacktivate. You only want to deactivate if you are going to activate with SAM (which you can only do with a SIM card). Run through again and don't check the deactivate box, you should be fine.
do i check the install ipad baseband?
because if i do and i install cydia or w/e and then boot it using redsnow. it still effing demands a sim card.

The iPad baseband has nothing to do with your ability to activate or hacktivate, I do not recommend you install it -- it causes MANY problems and you can never undo it. It also can brick your baseband depending on how new the phone is. If redsn0w is not hacktivating for you, you should use sn0wbreeze to make a custom ipsw that is hacktivated and restore in pwned DFU mode. If you've upgraded to the ipad baseband, you've now made this VERY difficult, as you will have to remove the baseband update from anything you attempt, or the phone will bootloop.
