Default Possible to unlock without jailbreaking?

With the new 3GS needing to do a tether jailbreak, is it possible to unlock without having to jailbreak? If it is possible then would the phone be able to reboot without any problems and still be able to keep the unlock?

The only unlock possible without jailbreaking is the official Apple unlock via iTunes. That requires your carrier to agree to allow Apple to unlock your iPhone.

I'M on O2 PAYG in the UK. Does anyone know what actually happens when Apple/O2 unlock the iPhones using this method. Do they send a Profile to your iPhone or is it TXT msg format or something.
Also has anyone been able to recreate this unlock method?

    Cheers
    Matt

The unlock code sent to your phone is unique for your phone. Examples have been captured but a significant increase in computing power is required to brute force the encryption. The communication happens via iTunes.

O2 seem to be fine about offering unlock for their customers in the UK now they have competition from orange/vodaphone. Just talk to them

    Thanks for the reply

O2 wont unlock my phone yet as I'm on Pay As You Go. They'll only do it after I've had the phone 12 months, then they charge me 10!

Doesn't seem right seeing as I've almost paid for the phone outright (538 for the 32Gb 3GS) yet they wont unlock it...

I do hate how much control the Mobile Operators assume they have!

That is a lot, you could indeed buy a factory unlocked iPhone for that price.

However I am sure O2 plan on you spending more than 1000 over the course of your contract.
