Default Long time user, long time away

I have not visited these forums in a while and am currently in need of an unlock/jailbreak for my iphone 3G. Last time i attempted an unlock i was unable to, as i have an iphone version 2.2.1 with modem firmware 2.30.03/Bootloader 5.9. However i have been reading around the forums and it seems to me that i can simply now update my phone via itunes to 3.1.2/05.11.07 and use blacksn0w to fully unlock/jailbreak my iphone.

Tutorial placed here by bmw: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f230/96010-2.htm

Im currently using a turbosim, as i am using tmobile as my carrier, however my iphone is jailbroken. Is this the route/tutorial i should follow or is there something better i can do to get my iphone fully unlocked/jailbroken?

I would recommend you update to 3.0 and use ultrasn0w to unlock. If that works fine. Then you can safely upgrade to 3.1.2 using pwnagetool (or download a pre-made pwnagetool custom ipsw if you are on Windows.)

The reason I recommend this approach is so that you still have blackra1n and 05.11.07 in your back pocket as a solution if ultrasn0w does not work (this is very unlikely).

If you go the direct to 3.1.2 way you suggest, you cannot go back and use ultrasn0w if blackra1n or 05.11.07 causes you problems.

The reports for ultrasn0w and the 04.26.08 baseband were overall very positive.

On the other hand, the reports for 05.11.07, blackra1n and OS 3.1.x were very mixed. Some had no problems, others have big problems. Some problems (like blackra1n's poor hacktivation and barebones jailbreak) can be corrected via Cydia. Wifi problems that have been reported with OS 3.1.2 don't seem to have a general fix especially if you have updated the baseband to 05.11.07.

Where the problems like (baseband, hardware, OS etc) are not known but there have been a lot of reports of wifi problems. You do not have bootloader 5.8 so you cannot downgrade baseband and need to be very careful when upgrading baseband.

Alright sounds like the best route; having an alternative if something goes wrong is definitely something i would love to have.

QQ, updating to 3.0, is there a specific website where i would the 3.0 firmware and if so what program would i use to install it on my iphone. I apologize for all the question, it has been a while since ive done any of this, and well processes seem to change constantly.

Also regarding upgrading to 3.1.2 using a regular or custom ipsw, what would be the best route, what are the differences of each?

To go to OS 3.0 and jailbreak with redsn0w follow this guide.
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.0.x Using RedSn0w (Windows)

Using regular IPSW, you risk 1. losing jailbreak and 2. losing unlock.
Custom ipsw via pwnagetool allows you to avoid both problems. It creates a pre-jailbroken custom ipsw. So you stay jailbroken. Also there is the option to disable the baseband update which preserves your unlock.

Thus pwnagetool and custom ipsw files created with it are the safest route to go to new OS versions.

Now comes the problems (and solutions)

    • Pwnagetool is mac only. Solution is to jailbreak once with another tool (redsn0w for example) and then download pre-made custom ipsw from the net (we cannot link to them here because they contain Apple copyrighted code) and shift-click the restore button in iTunes to load the custom ipsw (your iPhone must be jailbroken first or the custom ipsw will not restore successfully)
    • Unlock and jailbreak are available for OS 3.1.x (this is a confusing factor for many people. Blackra1n and blacksn0w are really very barebones solutions and the author is sporadic in giving attention to updates and fixing problems with these tools). I recommend avoiding these tools unless you absolutely need to use them (for example, you have bought a brand new iPhone that came with OS 3.1.2)
