Good news. Means you can use the custom ipsw option. I am trying to test this out - takes time to lock my phone out.

    Okay..

I fixed my test iPhone without requiring a restore after getting the locked out - connect to iTunes screen.

To fix this you need to do the following:

    1. Jailbreak your iPhone - you should use redsn0w 0.9.2 for this iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS on OS 3.1.2 Using RedSn0w (Windows)
    2. Use a tool like ifuntastic to copy the file com.apple.springboard.plist from /var/mobile/Library/Preferences to your local machine
    3. Use a property list editor to remove the following entries
      SBDeviceLockBlocked
      SBDeviceLockFailedAttempts
      SBDeviceLockBlockTimeIntervalSinceReferenceDate
      SBDeviceLockGracePeriod
    4. copy the file back (making sure to replace the existing file) and restart your iPhone

You can also just delete the com.apple.springboard.plist and restart your phone it will set up a new preference file for you. I just figured you might want to know what the exact settings are. The key value is SBDeviceLockBlocked (the rest are just clutter that should be removed)

I went to the page your linked, the iclarified iphone 3gs jailbreak instructions... a couple of problems.

Firstly, since we know that Apple is not digitally signing 3.1.2. anymore then why would I be instructed to do a shift-restore?

I'm assuming I should skip these steps... and all steps leading up to step 4. From here I went ahead and followed the steps 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

I skipped the custom boot logo and other custom option as I'm assuming it's just more fluff I don't need. I find it annoying they presented the information as if it were mandatory to do those two things.

Either way my phone restarted, rebooted, the help screen dissappeared and it started to load information ending step 8 and beginning step 9 but then it froze.

My iphone screen has an interlaced red and yellow gradient

and Redsnow is stuck on "uploading exploit"

Yes you skip step 2 - the rest you can do.. So you did that right.

Not sure why you have got the problem with uploading exploit.

No just that I have had trouble finding time to test this properly.

Note: If your device is not currently locked, com.apple.springboard.plist will NOT contain some (most) of the SBDeviceLocked* keys.

During my test, if you've never entered an incorrect passlock code, com.apple.springboard.plist only contains SBDeviceBlocked 'set to false'.
