    Default iPhone can't sync!

    Hi guys,

I bought an iPhone 3GS on eBay 2 months ago, it was 3.01 jailbroken + unlocked, and worked a charm. It recently kept turning itself on and off so I though, why not upgrade to 3.1.2 and re-jailbreak/unlock. Updated the firmware via iTunes, downloaded blackrain and made it rain. Jailbroke and unlocked it, the phone works fine (i.e. can use my sim and cydia etc.).

But when I plug it into iTunes:
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported."

I can't restore or anything via iTunes, nor can I sync any new songs/videos/anything to my iPhone. There are no options at all just that message.

What can I do? Hopefully you people will help me, I've been looking around the internet for ages!

What carrier are you with? Is it a legitimate iPhone carrier?

Did you use blackra1n RC3 (the latest version)? Previous versions of blackra1n did not support hacktivation.

Did you "update" or "restore" in iTunes? Did you restore from backup?
It seems to me that blackra1n has not hacktivated properly for you. This might happen if you "update" or restore from backup after you "restore"

    Solution #1
If you have access to a sim card from the network it was originally locked to.
    1. Power off the iPhone
    2. Remove your sim card
    3. Insert a sim card for the network you should be using (AT&T in the US and O2 in the UK)
    4. Power on the iPhone
    5. Sync iPhone with iTunes
    6. Power off the iPhone
    7. Insert your preferred sim card (in my case Vodafone UK)
    8. Power on the iPhone
    9. Connect to iTunes and your iPhone will once more be able to sync

    Solution #2 - recommended
    1. Start with the SIM card you normally use
    2. Make or download a custom IPSW from pwnagetool for 3GS that includes activation.
    3. Put your iPhone in recovery mode
    4. Shift-click restore (or option-click on OSX) and select the custom ipsw.
    5. Install blacksn0w to unlock
    6. Set up your iPhone as new.

    Solution #3
    1. Start with the SIM card you normally use
    2. Put your iPhone in recovery mode
    3. let iTunes automatically install the latest firmware (right now that is 3.1.2)
    4. Use blackra1n to jailbreak and hacktivate.
    5. Install blacksn0w to unlock
    6. Set up your iPhone as new.

I'm not sure what you mean by legitimate iPhone carrier, this carrier doesn't sell iPhones so no I guess not. I'm going to try your solution #3, but I'm wondering how to put the iPhone in restore mode? And if I can backup any of my apps (third-party or otherwise) and other data?

That is the LEAST recommended approach. I meant recovery mode, sorry for mixing these terms. The following thread explains how to enter this mode.

Thanks again for your help. I guess I'll try #2 then? I'm searching the interwebs for a "custom ipsw 3.1.2 iphone 3gs", but I'm worried if they'll be safe :-/ Thanks again for your halp.
