The unlock is 100% fine, the jailbreak is tethered, this works, but you will need to run blackra1n every time you restart the iPhone.

    YES!

and if you check the serial number on the box before you buy it, you will know if you will be stuck with a tethered jailbreak.

look at the 4th and 5th digits of the serial number, if they are lower than 40, you get the ability to jailbreak untethered.

Cool 32G 3Gs iPhone jailbreaked and unlocked

Hi guys! I have the pleasure to tell you that I bought a new 3GS iPhone at BESTBUY last week in San Francisco, and jailbreaked it right away with blakra1n. Used it in wifi etc for a week and just unlocked it yesterday with blaksn0w (THANX George !!) . Works PERFECT! I am awestruck... sooo easy!

I bought a 16Gb iPhone GS yesterday and unlocked it for T-Mobile last night using blackra1n/blacksn0w. Forth and fifth digit of the serial number being: 41. Voice and text works fine. WiFi works. I don't have a data plan yet but I have no reason to believe the Edge connection will not work as expected.

The only trouble I notice is a failure to connect to YouTube on WiFi. From lurking and reading, my understanding is that YouTube relies on a data certificate(s) that was not properly modified during the standard jailbreak/unlock. Many report that installing a "Push Fix" package through Cydia fixes the YouTube issue (as well as WiFi and Push). I have not installed this package because I have no problem with WiFi or Push. I'd rather figure out exactly what YouTube needs and just deal with that.

But, the reason for my post is to confirm that as of yesterday, November 6th, an Apple Store in Washington state was selling iPhones vulnerable to blackra1n/blacksn0w. YMMV.

ALL currently available iPhones 3G and 3GS are vulnerable to Blackra1n for JB and Blacksn0w for unlock. Yes, even the ones rolling off the assembly line today.

The issue is the newer ones will require to be connected to a PC and Blackra1n run again each time the phone is rebooted or restarts.

Sucka, you may want to check what happens on reboot. If yours was built in wk 41, there's a high possibility it needs the tether. If not, you got real lucky

YouTube needs a certificate/key pair, this does not need to be unique. Push Notifications requires a unique certificate/key pair.

PushFix package contains a non unique certificate/key pair for YouTube and also a non unique certificate/key pair for push notifications.

This means that it fixes YouTube, however it is not a reliable fix for push notifications. To fix this you need to get unique official certificate/key pair from Apple. This is usually issued during official activation. It is also possible for people who own an iPhone or iPod Touch that can be legitimately activated to extract out their certificates, this certificate can be then imported to a hacktivated iPhone to get proper push notification. The legitimate user can then restore or trigger reactivation again to generate a new set of certificates for themselves. This is the only way to get proper push notifications for hacktivated users.

Olethros, can the unique certificate for push notifications be generated on a legit 3G/3GS and then be imported to a hacktivated 2G? I doubt it though.. What's your take on it?

I believe this will work, the information from aviegas suggests that it does not matter what type of iPhone or iPod touch you have to generate the certificate as long as the certificate was generated via legitimate activation. Have seen a succcess report where the certificate was generated on an iPod Touch and then used on an Iphone.

Have not actually tested this myself but plan on testing it soon as I have a legit 3GS and a hacktivated 2G.

Great info, Olethros, thanks! I have access to a legit device and might try it! Can you link me to an instruction on how to dig up the certificate and import it? And speaking of legitimate activation - if we're dealing with a factory unlocked 3G/3GS does that involve just popping any sim card and activating, or do we have to also "Register the device" to generate those certificates? Thanks!
