    Default I thought you can Jailbreak/Unlock 3GS 3.1.2 ???

I recently bought a slightly used 3GS 3.1.2 w/ 5.11.07 modem with 870040 serial # so i thought it was older than week 41 and not tethered and i can jailbreak/unlock with Blackra1n.

I tried installing Blackra1n a few times and after the reboot the icon never shows up??? After reading a few threads they say too restore my phone with 3.1.2 again but of course now i-tunes wont allot it and says it is not authorized or something.

What is going on??? is it possible that the phone was already jailbroken?? How can i check? i bought a phone that i though had all the requirments and still having issues.

What am i missing here? I searched threads everywhere??

You have a week 4 2010 3GS, the 3rd digit refers to the year. So you needed to buy a 3GS with serial xx941xx or lower

The 3GS was not released until mid 2009, so I would have thought it was obvious that a week number of 04 could not have been from 2009.

So your 3GS is tethered jailbreak.

use redsn0w for initial jailbreak and then install blacksn0w from Cydia.

Make sure you select late model (new bootrom) during redsn0w jailbreak.

You should use blackra1n for the kickstarting the boot process, it works a bit faster than redsn0w (which also works for this)

Redsn0w is for mac, windows (and eventually linux also)

The new bootrom was introduced in late september 2009, this is why the magic week number has been around week 41-45 when iPhones started to appear with new bootrom.

Refurbished iPhones (new iPhones constructed from the working parts of iPhones that were replaced under warranty) can have a higher week number but still have the old bootrom.

The only way to be 100% sure is to put the phone into DFU mode and check the bootrom version. Anything based on serial number is effectively educated guesswork.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a similar question. My 3GS is a 50th week, 2009 model. Currently running the 3.1.2 FW with a 05.11.07 baseband.

Anyhow, is there a solution for a non-tethered jailbreak and/or unlock on this setup yet? I'm seeing a number of 3.1.3 updates jailbreak updates right now, but I'm not sure if any of those resolve the "tethered" issue or not.

Actually, I really need the "unlock" more than the jailbreaking, since I'm on T-Mobile. Is there a way to simply "unlock" my phone and get rid of the tethered ball & chain?

    Thanks,

    Yip

No untethered jailbreak released yet. The 3.1.3 jailbreaks will not work on your bootrom version. Wait for iPad release (maybe) or more likely new iPhone in June/July. No guarantees though (no one has yet posted any videos or proof they have an untethered exploit). Look at this challenge / guide to verify that an untethered jailbreak demo is real A good jailbreak video [iPhone Dev Team]

I'm assuming you mean t-mobile US and that you have an AT&T locked phone. As AT&T will not allow legitimate unlocking, you MUST be jailbroken to use any software unlock. There is no other option.

If there is a new untethered jailbreak it will be big news. You won't miss it.

That's what I figured, but thanks for clarifying that.
