You can only go safely to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 if you have old bootrom on your 3GS.
Check with the procedure detailed in this link: PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X
Blacksn0w RC2 instructions are in this link. http://www.hackint0sh.org/f230/117709.htm

it looks like i will need to put the phone in DFU mode if i want to check boot rom. and that means i will need to upgrade to 3.1.3 since i do not have 3.1.2 image on Cydia. which i do not want to do.
and since i cannot check boot rom version, i guess i need to wait until 3.1.3 is unlocked. re boot rom version, phone was purchased in nov 09 and i recall that i could only unlock it with blackra1n and not pwnage or dev-team solutions. which i think implies that i have the more recent bootrom, but not the most recent which has not been unlocked. anyhow, i am speaking out of my depth here.
thanks!

You do NOT have to restore your phone to get out of DFU mode.
When you manually go into DFU mode you can also manually exit this back to normal mode.
It is only when something really corrupts the iPhone and it can't boot normally, depending on how early the corruption is in the boot sequence - it either goes into recovery or DFU mode.
See PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X and http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm for details. This procedure is 100% safe and does not change your iPhone at all.
