Default Can I unlock my phone for just a couple of weeks?

I can't find a straight answer anywhere, so I'm hoping these forums can help. The next paragraph is some background info. I apologize for being so verbose. If you wanna skip the exposition, the question is in the last paragraph.

I'm going to Japan in a few weeks on business, and I'd like to rent a SIM card with unlimited data from Docomo. I've confirmed that it will work just fine in an unlocked iPhone. This solution will likely save me $300. My issue is that I don't really wanna void the warranty as I've had terrible luck with Apple products. This iPhone will likely be my last. I bought my first iPod ever a year ago and loved it so much that I bought an iPhone 3GS when it was released. Shortly thereafter, both devices failed and it's been nothing but problems since. I'm now on my third iPod and third iPhone...

So, I'm wondering.... If I jailbreak and unlock my iPhone with Blacksn0w, can I virginize it without leaving evidence? My plan was to jailbreak it on my desktop computer, so when I come back to the states I could wipe and restore it on the laptop to which it's normally synced. Will this be good enough should I need to make a warranty claim? I've received many different answers. Some say it will work, one guy said it wouldn't even sync, some say it will leave evidence on the baseboard, and others say it will brick the phone. Who do I believe?

An iTunes restore will effectively erase everything the local Apple/AT&T folks use to determine jb'ing/unlock status. So ..... no problem in this regard. Technically, some evidence will remain but the local folks don't have the expertise, tools, nor the inclination to search that deep.

However, the 3GS is an unusual beast. Depending upon date of manufacture, your phone may be a tethered boot -- where rebooting requires a computer. If you purchased your 3GS soon after it was released, you are good in this area. Lots of info exists on these subjects around the multitude of iPhone sites.

Are you sure about Japan and GSM? I travel a lot and use my 2G & 3G in many other countries, but have always heard Japan was CDMA and of course not work.

    Good luck.

Default Guess I should have clarified...

Sorry... I suppose it would have been good to mention that I have a 32GB 3GS purchased just after launch. I'll be able to connect to Docomo's network without any issues. I've read up on 3GS bootrom issues with Blackrain and confirmed that I'm OK in that regard. I read somewhere here on Hackint0sh that restoring does nothing to the baseboard, so you can restore it and still use other carriers. That would have been nice if not for the warranty issues.

Thanks for the reply. We'll see how this goes...

BTW: At the risk of violating site rules ... iClarified has great tuturials on iPhone jailbreaking and unlocking. Google is your friend

Mod / Admin: It's ok to chastise, and/or ban if my hint was a violation of the rules.

Default Sorry for the double post, but....

I did it. I didn't realize just how easy that would actually be. I guess I shouldn't have been such a wuss. I'm just paranoid.

I have no interest in custom apps yet (haven't seen any that really interest me), so I just unlocked the phone and removed Blackra1n from the springboard. Apologies for being a n00binz and thanks for the help,

No problem w/iTunes. Go for it. My primary reason for jb'ing is Winterboard. It allows for a lot of custom themes .... but I use it ONLY because I hate the default Apple black background. With Winterboard I can have any picture as a background.
