Default can I unlock a french Iphone 3gs?

    Hi guys,
    would appreciate some advice.
My girlfriend has been given a french iphone 3gs on Orange France network and she wants to unlock it to use with another network / country. Is it possible? Also how do we find the baseband etc if the iphone is locked so we cannot access the settings etc.
I have looked around for solutions but not had any luck so far so some advice would be great.
    Cheers

    Couple of things:

    1) You say the phone is locked so you can't get to the settings -- do you mean locked with a passcode?
    2) You can use TinyUmbrella or f0recast to determine the currently running iOS version and baseband.

Without knowing the iOS revision or the baseband, we can't really answer as to whether or not you can unlock. Let us know and we'll help.

    Cheers for the info n1ckn4m3.

When I say it is locked I mean it is on Orange France network and we do not have an Orange France sim card so we cannot access any of the menus etc, just emergency calls.

So I used f0recast and got the following info (blanked out the serial):

    so iOS 4.3.5 (8L1) and Baseband 05.16.02

so from that info would you be able to guide me as to if it is unlockable, and if so how to do it? I am pretty much a newb so step by step would be great

    Cheers

Unfortunately you're in a bad situation. The baseband in your phone can ONLY be unlocked by upgrading to the iPad baseband, and that causes serious issues over the long term (you can no longer restore a stock firmware, Apple will always know you've jailbroken, GPS will stop working, you can never undo it, newer models will brick if they have 06.15 and are upgraded to iOS 5, etc.).

The real answer right now is that unless your life depends on the phone being unlocked, you really should wait until a better solution is in place. If you absolutely have to unlock, go to the dev-team's site and read all of the information there about the iPad baseband so that you fully understand the risks and the impact it will have on your device before upgrading to it -- I can't stress enough that it has the capability of causing serious problems and will directly impact how you can use and restore your device in the future. There's NO going back once you do it, absolutely no way to undo.

Argh that is bad news, but thanks for being clear about how risky it is.
So is the problem that the baseband is very recent on that phone and there is not yet a good solution for it? Or is it just an unlucky baseband to have?
I dont suppose it is worth asking when a better solution may found, just from your experience with time frames of other older basebands being 'hacked'?

    Cheers

The 05.16.02 baseband is fairly new, I can't remember exactly but I believe it was either 4.3.3 or 4.3.5 that included that version. That's pretty much why it hasn't been unlocked yet. As far as the timeframe goes, I really feel we're coming due for a new unlock. There have been some advancements for the iPhone 4S's baseband recently, and there have been a few quiet advancements for some of the newer basebands for the iPhone 3G/S/4 as well. Since 5.0.2 is coming and 5.1 as well, it's possible that they may wait until 5.1 to release the unlock -- but with Apple playing the cat and mouse game better than ever, the last year has seen the teams lose very important exploits just due to time. That may shorten their release windows as the exploit is only good if they can get it into the hands of the people who need it before Apple patches the exploit and everyone updates...

Ok sounds like it is a good idea to wait around for a little while to see if anything else emerges to allow us to unlock. Is there a place we can follow which will update us as to if and when that baseband becomes more easily unlockable? Such as a blog or forum on this site?

    Cheers

We recommend looking at the news section here as well as the dev-team's official blog and twitter accounts. That will provide you the most up to date information about it. Beyond that, you can bet that once new unlocks or jailbreaks are released, you'll see them discussed very heavily here.
