You were in Recovery mode NOT DFU mode - this is why you could not see the iBoot value.
The problem is I can't get into DFU mode, seems it only goes into recovery. I managed to get through the redsn0w 2 jailbreak but when the phone reboots it immediately shuts off.

Why are you spending so much time investigating on the bootrom version ? Olethros already assure you that your 3GS has old bootrom based on the week number (and I'm also positive that you have old bootrom).

If you can't put the phone in DFU mode then you're not doing it right.
Anyway, you should be more concern about fixing your phone so it would boot following the method that we pointed you to.

Up until three days ago I didn't even kmow what a bootrom was, I'm simply trying to learn.

As for DFU mode, I've watch youtube vids on this and it seem simple. My phone is always in an off state unless sleep + home are held in which it boots to the apple logo and dies. In this state it doesn't register with itunes. From there I can only go into recovery (I just now realized that DFU is recovery mode?)

I have been working on the solution Olethros has pointed me to and like I said have managed to download and install redsn0w 2. Though when the reboot occurs the phone once again just dies.

I will continue to ask questions and if you feel they are worthless or stupid, sorry just ignore them as I am desperate to fix my iphone without losing all my data.

I'm not discouraging your from asking questions. Don't get me wrong.
The reason i brought it up is because you started to wander off in another direction and I just want you to stay focus on the problem at hand.

DFU mode and REcovery mode are 2 different thing.
REcovery mode you see the cable+cd on the phone.
DFU mode, the screen is black (you think the phone is off but it's not because the screen is black).
    Instruction here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/53930.htm

To fix your problem, you should not be in DFU mode. If you want to experiment with DFU mode to confirm the bootrom version then by all mean it's fine with me.

Sorry to go all defensive, just frustrated at this whole thing. Just seems I've got a lot of catching up to do in terms of learning.

I understand the DFU vs Recovery now, thanks for the link...I have iboot file 359.3...thanks!

From what I gather the problem with my phone stems from an update that changed a critical file used in start up of the phone. I'm not educated enough to even attemp coding so I'm at the mercy of Beej and his solution.

I understand you are frustrated when something like this happened.
There is no coding required on Beej blog as long as you have a Mac ... I think because i briefly glanced through it.

If you are on Windows, you may want to look at this thread here:
    Cydia Updates
Read from beginning to understand the issue and pay attention to post #83.

I hope the above information will help you out.

Don't be intimidated by the information. Just take your time and proceed slowly. As much as we would like to help you, it's nearly impossible to walk you through step by step without having the device with us. The ball is in your hand and we here to help the best we can.

I've read the thread carefully, but I'm under the impression that my iphone would need to be able to boot up fully to do the steps in post #83?

As of now my phone boots up to the apple logo and sits for 4 mins before rebooting. Where before it would boot up to the logo then just shut off.

Please correct me if I am wrong as I would like to try that solution instead of waiting for BeeJ as he is surely overwhelmed at this point.
