Default 3GS on 3.1.2, Recovered from Apple logo loop and now need to know what my options are

I was able to "recover" from being stuck on apple logo due Blackra1n/Blacksn0w JB/Unlock and WiFi issue. But now that I can get into my iPhone, it has the Wifi option greyed out.

    What are my options?

Is it possible to get to 4.2.1 with JB AND Unlocked? Is it recommended or should I stay on 3.1.2?

A detailed step by step guide would be very helpful. (fyi, I have access to a Mac Pro)

What baseband and iOS version are you currently running?
What bootrom does your 3GS have?
Do you have a 4.1 SHSH saved?

    Firmware (iOS) is 3.1.2
    Baseband 05.11.07
Bootrom - not sure of the version# but its one where Tethering is NOT needed.
SHSH was saved using tinyumbrella from 3.1 through to 4.2.?

Great news, one last question: do you have access to a mac? The only reliable way to prevent your baseband being updated is to use Pwnagetool to create a custom IPSW.
You need to prevent baseband update to keep your ability to unlock with ultrasn0w.

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool [Mac]

    The options I recommend are:

    1. Use a Mac running OS X 10.6 or 10.5 for the whole process (as per the guide above)
    2. Setup Mac OS X in a virtualized install (using the free virtual box) - you can find links to guides for this under the OSX86/hackint0sh section of this forum. (use the search function). You only need to make the custom IPSW in OS X.
    or
You get a trusted friend with a mac to make the custom IPSW
Once you have an IPSW from a trusted source then you can restore it using windows by using the "enter pwned dfu mode" option included in Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8

    Options I don't recommend:
Downloading an IPSW from an untusted source. This is software piracy, illegal and it has the risk of malware or the biggest risk of all, it won't prevent your baseband from being updated.
Using sn0wbreeze to make a custom IPSW - this is not a reliable solution. We refuse to support or recommend it here.
Restoring to original 4.2.1 (updating your baseband) and then loading the iPad 6.15 baseband to enable unlock again (this has significant unwanted side effects)

To answer your initial question, Yes I can get access to a Mac Pro (not sure what version of OSX).

Your reply is very encouraging, unfortunately a little over my head. So correct me if I'm wrong, I need to :

    1) Use the guide from your link to Jailbreak using pwnage tool on Mac without updating baseband. Noticed the guide is to get to 3.1.3, is 4.2.x not doable? Will I need AT&T sim?

    2) Use Ultrasn0w on Mac to create custom IPSW (hopefully there is a guide somewhere) for the unlock and load the custom IPSW using iTunes. Is the IPSW created from the 3.1.3?

    Thanks for helping.

I'm sure I'm missing something in between.

Sorry I gave you the wrong iClarified link -mistake in copy/pasting.

I've just re-read your original post and realised that to solve your wifi problem, updating to iOS 4.2.1 won't probably help.

The only software solution to wifi problems (especially a blacksn0w related wifi problem) is to reflash the same 05.11.07 baseband

The baseband files and the updater utility is contained in the 3.1 or 3.1.2 IPSW for 3GS and for 3G. I have explained previously how to extract this and reflash the baseband.

We can't link directly to a download location for this baseband file. (as it's illegal for us to redistribute parts of an IPSW without Apple's permission).

The following posts explain how to extract the files you need.
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/f203/90394...htm#post455536

    http://www.hackint0sh.org/f203/90394...htm#post500077

Remember that there are several causes for wifi problems on the 3G and 3GS, most of these are hardware related.
There is no real risk that you can make things worse by trying to reload the same baseband version.

Sorry, I forgot to update previously, that WiFi started working. Once I had access to the phone I was scared to switch it off in case it got stuck on the apple logo again, I ended up switching it off without thinking about it and then I switched it back on after I realized what I done and to my amazement it rebooted fine and now WiFi was working perfectly.

So it seems like there is no hardware issue with Wifi on the phone.

So now what was it that I needed to do exactly?

    Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure what you wanted to do. Now that your wifi problem is fixed. You asked about updating to iOS 4.2.1 or 4.1

There are guides for using pwnagetool 3GS to go to iOS 4.1 (and that is pretty straightforward) See iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1] for example. The only gotcha with 4.1 is that Apple is no longer signing restores to 4.1 so you need to have saved a 4.1 SHSH in advance via Cydia's "make my life easier", or manually via TinyUmbrella.

You won't need an AT&T sim for any of these procedures.

There isn't actually a single guide for preserving baseband and loading 4.2.1 on an old bootrom 3GS (but it is possible)
If you really want to go to 4.2.1 (and keep your baseband)

    Summary:
For those Mac users with an old-bootrom 3GS who really know what they’re doing, here’s a minimal 3GS 4.2.1 bundle that will get you to 4.2.1 without updating your baseband. Be sure to uncheck “Activate the iPhone” using Expert mode. To actually jailbreak after you’ve restored with the help of that bundle, please use redsn0w. If you don’t know how to drop a bundle into PwnageTool.app, please hold off on 4.2.1 until it’s untethered for everyone (or wait for a nice tutorial from somewhere like iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials)
Install the special 3GS 4.2.1 bundle into Pwnagetool 4.1.3 using this guide: iClarified - iPhone - How to Add a Firmware Bundle to PwnageTool
You follow the same general procedure that is explained in iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1] but you start with a 3GS 4.2.1 download from here: IPSW http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm
Don't include SSH, don't enable custom logos, make sure "activate the phone" is not checked.
Then follow the prompts to enter pwned DFU mode and restore with this custom IPSW.

Then you need to jailbreak with redsn0w (ignore the sections about updating to iPad baseband) iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3GS Using RedSn0w (Mac) [4.2.1]

Once you get to 4.1 or 4.2.1 jailbroken without updating your baseband you can simply install ultrasn0w (you can follow this guide)
    iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock the iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G Using UltraSn0w

Optionally (but recommended) you can install SAM to give better activation (and reduce the chance of poor battery life or problems with push notifications)
iClarified - iPhone - How to Hactivation Your iPhone Using Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM)

    -----

    Two important points to consider
    1. It might seem like a lot of work to prevent your baseband from being updated, but as of today - there is no confirmed way to downgrade baseband on the 3GS.
The iPad baseband solution described at Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle has some serious drawbacks . which is why I only recommend it if you have already "accidentally updated" your baseband.
    2. If you have data on the phone that you want to keep (saved SMS messages, call history, data associated with an app) you need to take extra precautions before you begin.

    Thumbs up

Absolutely brilliant Post, exactly what I needed to know. You should make that post a sticky. Excellent information.

I will have to set a side a weekend to make sure I understand the process and carry it out.

Thanks for the help. Will report back with my results once I have had a chance to implement the process.

Absolutely brilliant post. You should make that post a Stick.

Now I just need to set aside some time to carry out those instructions.

In the mean time, going back the the original cause of all my headaches being the the unstable version of Blacksn0w, is there a way to update the unlock using blacksn0w RC2 and how would I do that?

    Thanks again for the help.
