An Information Campaign

I have an unlock for 05.11.07. I will be releasing on 11/04/09, for $0.00

First off, Jody Sanders, I am declining your $10,000. Why? Because you, and the rest of the iPhone unlock sites out there are scum. You make money selling freeware; that's not cool, and I am in no way going to legitimize it.
Seriously, the people who really lose here are the customers. These sites are full of blatant lies, claiming to have unlocks for 05.11.07 People buy them, and are told the unlock is in development, and the release date is unknown. Imagine you bought a cup of coffee and were told it's in development? Recently, many of these sites sent out e-mails saying they made major breakthroughs and the unlock will be ready 11/04/09. Coincidence that that's the release date of blacksn0w?
I'm not going to post all these scam sites here, as I don't want to give them the pagerank boost. Rather I'll give you a whitelist, two people make unlocks, me and the dev team. Every iPhone unlock site you see out there is selling our stuff, repackaged in some form or another. Same goes for jailbreaks, although ih8sn0w and chronicdev are legit. Notice what all the legit ones have in common? They are free.
Now despite rumors of the ferocity of my legal team, they actually are pretty poor lawyers. And the scum who run these websites are the type who get off on legal battles. So we have to fight them in another way, and I'm asking for everyones help on this. Our weapon is information. Get the truth out, that all iPhone unlocks and jailbreaks are free, and if you are buying something, you aren't getting anything a simple google search couldn't get you, and are probably funding someones crack habit.
This is the first time I have tried to make something simple for the end users, and it enrages me to see people selling it. Let's shut all these assholes down, and tell the iPhone owning world all they need is at blackra1n.com, including blacksn0w instructions on it's release date, 11/04/09(yes, will support hacktivation). You do your part, and I'll do mine making things as simple, reliable, and straightforward as possible.

No you cannot do this and there is no need anyway.

The iPhone 2G has a different mobile phone chip to the chip used in the 3G and 3GS

It is not possible to use the baseband from a 3G or 3GS in a 2G iPhone.

The baseband for 2G iPhones has not changed since OS 1.1.4 and can be permanantly unlocked using bootneuter.

The 3G and 3GS use the exact same baseband and mobile chip. This has not been permanantly unlocked yet because the security is much stronger than that used on the 2G iPhone. This is why a new unlock is required everytime the baseband is updated

i dont frequent the sites like i use to when i had my 2g but read geohots blog and think it's fantastic that he's made his comments and trying to get the word out there to keep people from getting ripped off in these unlock scams.

i would think boards like this join in and you think the best way would be in the top of each of the involved sections to put a sticky thread at the top with bold letters saying 'YOU CAN UNLOCK YOUR PHONE FOR FREE. DO NOT PAY THESE SCAMMERS" and provide a link to the appropriate sites that will offer the free unlock for each version of the phone or if there is legal issues, just point them to geohots blog or tell them how to find it easy on google.

I agree with Olethros that you cannot update the baseband

But, if what you really want to know is can you update a 2G to Firmware 3.1.2, then the answer is YES, and you will still be able to be unlocked.

You dont even need to wait for blacksn0w, which will also unlock 3G and 3GS iPhones on FW 3.1.2

Basically, 2G owners need not fear losing their unlock when they update firmware, because as Olethros points out, the 2G is basically permanently unlockable..

It's a long read, but you get the idea why the community hates him so much.

There are 3 potential sources of iPhone unlock for stock Apple FW 3.1.2 (not a pwned 3.0)

1. Dev-Team's Pwnage Tool jailbreak and Ultrasnow unlock http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Dev Team cannot currently jailbreak nor unlock 3.1.2, and they have not posted anything to indicate otherwise. In fact, their posts suggest it might NEVER happen.

2. Geohot's Blackra1n jailbreak and Blacksn0w unlock http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/

Geohot's Blackra1n will jailbreak but not activate. On Nov 4th he is releasing a tool that will jailbreak AND hacktivate AND UNLOCK!

3. Chronic Dev's Greenpoison jailbreak and unlock http://chronic-dev.org/blog/

Chronic Dev has not released anything, they are holding onto it for later in the year, I dont know why. And, it sounds like its just a tethered jailbreak for ipods, no unlock for iPhone.. I will admit my mistake if I end up being wrong, but for now, imvho, Greenpoison is irrelevant, nothing it will do will matter, cause by the end of the year Geohots untethered jailbreak, hacktivation, and unlock will have already been in use for over 6 weeks.

Moral of the story, if you want to unlock an OTB FW3.1.2 iPhone, INCLUDING the 3GS with the NEW bootrom If I read the info right, then go to blackra1n.com on Nov 4th.

Chronic may have found another exploit so he is saving it it. That's just my guess.
We know that Apple will be updating fw in the future to defeat the usb-exploit for JB and to defeat blacksn0w.
