I have basically the exact same setup as you and would love to get on iPhone OS 4 also.

There does not seem to be a good, easy to follow tutorial for upgrading from blackra1n jailbreak running 3.1.2 to 4.0

I personally don't care what jailbreak I use. All I care about is that I do not lose any apps/contact/photos/data etc and that there are clear cut instructions to do the jailbreak. Some screen captures would be fantastic to make it easy to confirm I am not screwing anything up.

Can anyone help us out? Has anyone been able to go from blackra1n 3.1.2 to 4.0? Any help would be very much appreciated!

I remember doing the blackra1n jailbreak last fall and it was fantastically easy!

And as of right now it does not look like there is a blackra1n for OS 4.0.
According to wikipedia article on jail breaking right now you can only use redsn0w and PwnageTool 4.01 and these only work for Non-MC Models.
So we may need to sit and be patient until something is released for our devices.

Let me know if you find any more info on this.

    Thanks,

Blackra1n ended up having a lot more reported problems than any other recent jailbreak. It may have been easy for you and you may have had no problems - count yourself very lucky.

It is becoming more and more important that iPhone owners do research before allowing upgrades. Blackra1n's biggest problem was that it encouraged unsafe updating and that then meant more prople used blacksn0w (which has been very unstable for many, causing boot loops)

The iPhone dev team's tools are developed by a team and recieve ongoing support and updates. Geohot simply abandons the tools he creates and moves onto the next paid job or "fun hack".

This is correct, geohot will likely eventually release a jailbreak tool for OS 4.0 - I am unsure if he will keep using the blackra1n name.

I really hope that he waits until September to release a new jailbreak, this would mean all 2010 iOS devices could be jailbroken for life.

Olethros Thanks again for intricate details - Very much appreciated. I guess we're in a hold position until something comes up.

Where would be the best place to keep up to date with all JB tools/options?

Default restore and DFU mode fail

    Hi,

I'm in the same group as those here:
    Phone: 3Gs
    Jailbreak: blackra1n
    Version: 3.1.2(7D11)
    Model: older, non-MC type
    Modem Firmware: 05.11.07

When I try to restore using DevTeam's pwned ipsw, it fails because it can't get past the tethered boot problem. I.e. since the phone needs blacksn0w to boot properly, I can't get past the "connect to iTunes" screen and DFU mode also fails.

What do you all recommend? Should I restore to stock 3.1.2, and then use redsn0w? And then upgrade to the pwned 4.0? Thanks!

If you have new 3GS (ie tethered jailbreak) then you cannot use pwnagetool (right now, might be possible in the future)

Once you try a pwnagetool custom ipsw on your device, the only way to get it working again is to restore to original 3.1.2 (or 3.1) and jailbreak with redsn0w or blackra1n. As Apple has stopped signing 3.1.2 you need a cached SHSH (on cydia or locally) to restore successfully.

The MC \ MB model number has no special meaning on 3GS. It only is useful for 2nd gen iPod touch.

Please don't confuse blackra1n and blacksn0w it is blackra1n that kickstarts you out of stuck at recovery mode during boot. Redsn0w can do the same thing - both only work up to 3.1.2 for your device.

Spirit will work for you on 3.1.3 with iTunes 9.1.x

There is no public solution for you to use iOS 4 on your iPhone yet.

Default I just did with exactly same setup.

But I dont think I can use the pwnage tool..

This is from the DEV-Team site

    Phone: 3Gs
    Jailbreak: blackra1n
    Version: 3.1.2(7D11)
    Model: MC135LL
    Modem Firmware: 05.11.07
    iBoot: 359.3
    Serial#: Week 39
ITunes: 9.2 (Can downgrade I'm sure, somehow?)

I just did with exactly the same setup as above and pwnagetool 4.01 (except week# which I don't believe matters... it's the iBoot ver. that is key. 359.3 is indeed the "old" bootrom mentioned by the dev team). Everything went smoothly and the 3Gs is happily running ios 4.0 jailbroken courtesy of the dev team... Thanks! Dev Team! You guys (and gals if any... don't really know) are awesome.

Just repeating relevant links here for your convenience... including to a couple of "how-tos" from other kind souls.

    Dev Team: Dev-Team Blog
Redmond Pie tutorial:Jailbreak iOS 4 with PwnageTool 4.0 / 4.01 [How to Guide] | Redmond Pie
iPhone Download Blog tutorial: Tutorial: How to Jailbreak iPhone iOS 4 with PwnageTool

Both tutorials are basically the same, but for all you anal people like myself, I'm sure that offers some comfort.

The one tiny thing to clarify is that when pwnagetool says ihaz Success and tells you to put your iPhone into recovery mode and restore the ipsw, it's not meaning dfu mode... no special mode actually, just plug it into iTunes, then option-Click "Restore" (remember the option key! or Shift on windoze i think)

Note that the restore basically gives you a "clean" iphone. You will have to restore a backup to get all your apps, music, etc. back on it. Which means, remember to do a backup before you "restore"/upgrade to ios 4!

If you require a tethered boot, you have the latest bootrom and you cannot presently jailbreak 4.0 iOS on your device. Wait for the new tools as mentioned in the thread.
