If it's a carrier locked device (and I'm assuming it is), we'd need the following info to be able to help:

    1) What model iPhone? (2G, 3G, 3GS)
    2) What firmware is it currently running? You can use something like iRecovery to kick the device out of the recovery mode if it is just in recovery to find the firmware revision.
    3) What carrier is your SIM card from?
    4) What carrier was the phone on in Austria?

Let us know and we should be able to point you in the correct direction. If it's an older phone (2G or 3G, not 3GS) then you've got very little to worry about as these devices can be upgraded and downgraded fairly easily. You'd still want to ensure that you only used PwnageTool to create custom firmwares as you wouldn't want to upgrade the 3G's baseband unnecessarily, but because of the lack of SHSH requirement for flashing, you can upgrade and downgrade the firmware on those models with little issue.

    O.k, here we go

    1: it`s a 3G
    2: i really don`t know ;-( , how can i find that out with recovery ??
3: My Simcard is from Yallo (at least i`m hoping that i can use it)
    4: My Friend used Telering

The problem is that he doesn`t have this Telering simcard anymore.
So i`m not able to get it to work.

Good news, it being a 3G means there's a pretty high likelihood of it being able to be unlocked.

I would use iTunes to shift-restore a copy of 3.1.2 onto the device (you can, the 3G doesn't do the SHSH signature check), restore it to working order, then use redsn0w to hacktivate and jailbreak, then use the latest blacksn0w (RC2) to do the unlock. Depending on the 3G band in your area, you may need to disable 3G in the iPhone settings to make the phone work.

Ultimately though, since you've got the 3G and not the 3GS, it's a lot easier to play the firmware switcheroo since you don't have to worry about SHSH signatures on file.

I tried that last week for several times.
The problem is that itunes says:
can`t activate because there`s no valid simcard installed, bla, bla, bla.

The Iphone says:No SIM card installed

I also can`t get into DFU mode.

    Don`t know what to do.

This is because you are not properly following instructions to hacktivate the device. Since you are not using a legit carrier, you must hacktivate to get past the No SIM or 'Cannot Activate because there's no valid SIM' errors.

For more information on hacktivation itself and how to do it with the available tools, check here:

Step by step tutorial to Unlock (Hacktivate) and Jailbreak iPhone 2g 3g 3gs 3.1.2 05.11.07 baseband using Blacksnow or Blacksn0w or blackra1n | technoNix

While no one here recommends using blackra1n to do the jailbreak, I was unable to quickly find a tutorial that showed how to hacktivate using any of the devteam tools -- I know they can do it, I just couldn't find a good example of one. I'm sure someone else will piggyback if they know of a better tutorial and post a reply, but even if they don't, the information above should be enough to get you going.

Also, reading that post presented me with the following information that may or may not be applicable: "Important Update: If you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7, then using “Windows XP compatibility mode” may cause the iPhone to hang at recovery mode. If you are getting the same problem, then try using Blackra1n as is- without any compatibility mode. This may solve the problem."

agreed blackra1n is not the best jailbreak

my suggestion (especially if he has trouble putting phone into dfu or recovery mode) is to jailbreak with blackra1n then restore with pwnagetool futon ipsw (with activation enabled)

that removes all the downsides of blackra1n.
