Default Tried to update Jailbroken (Purplera1n) iPhone 3GS to latest iPhone OS 4.0

I mistakenly had my iPhone 3GS hooked up while updating to the latest iTunes. At the time iTunes was updating, my iPhone screen displayed "syncing in progress". So, I waited almost an hour for the "sync" to stop. After iTunes completed updating, it stated that my iPhone needed to be Restored as it could not be updated to the latest OS (I assume because it found the jailbroken s/w?). I was not given the option to back up any of my photos...which is the only data I care about saving at this point. If I lose all apps, jailbroken or not, I don't care. I just want to retrieve my photos first before restoring my iPhone back to its original factory settings.

Currently, my iPhone screen is stuck on the BlackRa1n image.

I need a lot more details.

Old or new bootrom? Bootrom - The iPhone Wiki
What SHSH do you have saved? You can check this with TinyUmbrella The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella

You mention purplera1n, then say that the device is stuck on blackra1n image. This is strange.

What iOS version does your iPhone have currently? 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1, 3.1.2??

It's likely that you can get your data back, but you need to not blindly try different options.

Also, have you checked if the photos are stored in the backup on your local machine that iTunes makes as part of the syncing process? There are programs that can read this backup and extract the contents of it.

I believe I have the old bootrom since I bought the iPhone new once it came out. And, since I never synced my iPhone with iTUnes, I think it was iOS 3.0.

I have not yet checked what SHSH I have with tinyUmbrella.

Is there still hope of retrieving my photos and contact info? That is all I care about at this point. If not, I'm willing to risk completely losing everything and restoring the iPHone back to its original settings. I don't plan on jailbreaking again.

With regards to purplera1n, it was what I used to jailbreak my iPHone. My husband tried to load blackra1n and the iPhone got stuck with the blackra1n image on the screen.

    Thanks much for your help!

First step is to check your local backup that iTunes makes when its syncs the phone. This is your best chance.
Do you run Mac OS X or Windows?

Jailbreaking is something that requires a bit of research and maintenance, in particular you need to take control of the iTunes and iPhone update process (turning off all auto-updating) and being sure to research compatbility before you run any manual updates.

There was no TinyUmbrella when purplera1n was released, however there was a clear message that the SHSH was vital to staying jailbroken (and by extension being able to always recover your data). Geohot's purplera1n site had a link to download a partial SHSH (one key file signed for your iPhone) when you pasted in the ECID.
