No problem at all, this is normal behaviour if you have the new bootrom on your 3GS.

There are plenty of threads on this forum and other places talking about Apple's updated bootrom that started shipping on iPhones in late September.

You are stuck with a tethered jailbreak until the iPhone hackers find another bootrom exploit.

It took about 6 months last time to find a bootrom hole (this was last year when the second generation iPod touch was in the same situation).

Also, just one clarification, you said the phone boots to DFU mode each time. This is not true, it actually gets stuck in recovery mode at boot. If it booted to DFU mode, the screen would stay black the entire time.

so about this new bootrom, cant we put a custom ipsw or is it impossible too?
I mean there should be a way to run some code before the machine tries to boot and jailbreak it everytime it reboots. :/

No legitimate iPhone hacking group claims to have a solution for this yet. It is not easy to fix.

    Default same problem.

I just recently bought a brand new 3GS from Dubai, for lots of cash as they come factory unlocked.

I still wanted to jailbreak the phone however to get the fun stuff like internet tethering and whatnot working.

First tried the Pwnage tool by creating a custom firmware, and when it rebooted it just gets stuck in DFU mode.

Restored it, tried with blackrain, rebooted and it's stuck in recovery mode .

As I have already mentioned once in this thread the phone is not stuck in dfu mode. If you actually see any graphics on the screen it cannot be dfu mode.

Read the howto/stickyregarding dfu mode and restore with a stock apple 3.1.2 ipsw and you will get a working iPhone again.

Other threads have already explained that pwnage tool does not yet support the new bootrom

When I tried to use pwnage tool it was in DFU mode as there were no graphics on the screen. When I tried with blackrain it did have graphics (restore mode).

Thanks for the info however. I suppose I'll just wait around until there's an exploit for the new bootrom.

    Default Slightly different problem...

I have read all the posts and stickies about Blackra1n being a tethered reboot, but am I correct in understanding that that's supposed to only be the case with the newer 3gs? I had a jailbroken phone using the Pwnage tool on my old 3gs (model A1 something) and it worked great for a long time until it completely locked up and I had no choice but to update to 3.1.2. I then used Blackra1n 3rc and now instead of having to use Blackra1n to reboot, I can't reboot AT ALL. It gets stuck on the silver Apple screen.

I used Blackra1n on my dad and my roomate's older 3gs's and they both can reboot just fine. Am I missing something? Did updating to 3.1.2 somehow make it so I need the tethered reboot, even though I have the older phone? Please help! I can't seem to find the answers by searching or googling. Thank you.
