    Question

Last week I was trying to figure out a way to disable the unlock temorarily so I could boot up the phone. Comex helped me create a special version of redsn0w that doesn't actually run the jailbreak but simply runs a delete command to get rid of /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist. This way CommCenter doesn't start and therefore blacksn0w doesn't load with it. Once I booted up the phone successfully I immediately removed blacksn0w and installed RC2. Make sure you have a virgin (and running) CommCenter before installing RC2. What i mean by this is that it should tell you there is no SIM when you take your SIM out, and tell you it is an invalid SIM when you pop it back in. If CommCenter isn't running properly try this command:

    launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist

Also make sure the old blacksn0w.dylib is deleted from /usr/lib before you install RC2.

    Here is the modified redsn0w:

    redsn0w-mac_0.9.4-modified.zip

Simply run through the normal jailbreak process and make sure to select "Install Cydia" - NOT "just boot tethered right now". No, this will not install Cydia again, since the code should only run the delete command. You will see the "downloading jailbreak data" screen and then it will reboot (hopefully) to the home screen! Good luck
I have a 3GS iPhone 3.1.2 (05.07.11) that is now (since Sept) stuck on the apple logo after I had carried out a network reset (which was to try an fix the loss of Wifi). The phone was JB/unlocked using Blackra1n. The thing is I really need to recover my contacts the above seems to suggest that I can at least boot back to do this. But after reading the above several times I'm not sure I understand all the steps. My understanding of the steps are as follows (please correct me if I'm wrong)

    1) Need access to Mac ( I have access to Hackintosh OSX 10.2, will this do?)

    2) Install and run modified Redsnow

    3) Run through unlock process (need to get some clarity on what exact steps these are)

    4) Once phone is booted again, remove Sim makesure it says "No SIM"

    5) Re-insert SIM and it should say "Invalid SIM"

    6) If the SIM message do not appear carry out:
    launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
Also make sure the old blacksn0w.dylib is deleted from /usr/lib before you install RC2.

    7) Install RC2 (not sure what this is and where to get it or what this does?)

    8) ? what next, if anything

After step 3, would I be able to somehow extract my contacts from the phone? Once I have my contacts, do I just reboot in DFU and restore the phone 3.1.2 and then use redsn0w to JB/Unlock?

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You must have made a typo when you wrote 10.2, there were no hackint0sh devices before 10.4 as OS X was only available for PPC machines.
A hackint0sh might work, depends very much on how wellyour USB chipset is supported by OS X.

blackra1n is NOT an unlock read http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32703.htm and start using the correct terms. Blacksn0w is an unlock.

your step 3 is vauge and completely incorrect - you need to remove blacksn0w, you don't want to reinstall anything at this step.
There needs to be a step where you remove blackra1n's hacktivation and replace it with either legitimate activation + SAM or a real hacktivation patch.
Step 7 should be to install ultrasn0w

I know I haven't provided a detailed step by step guide and have likely confused you more. This is an old problem but some of the solutions have improved (ultrasn0w supports your baseband, better activation via SAM than the horrible blackra1n hacktivation) since the original post was created.

    Olethros,

Fisrt of all, thank you for being patient and answering questions, I really appreciate it.

My situation just changed in that I now have access to my iPhone, it came back to life after I connected the phone to my computer running iTunes and left it connected and after a few minutes it just booted into the phone. Not sure what exactly made it come out of the stuck apple logo. So anyway I quickly extracted my contacts information (Whew!!!) and now the problem is that wifi is not working and the wifi option is deactivated (will not allow me to select). Since I now have everything I need from the phone, Can I now just start over to jailbreak and unlock? Current version of phone is 3.1.2 (05.11.07) and I'm sure I had the SHSH save to cydia (anyway to check?) and was wondering if it was possible to update to 4.2.1 with both JB and unlock?

    Thanks again for the help

TinyUmbrella can check what SHSH you have saved with Cydia. Just download it and run. Connect your iPhone to computer via USB, it should appear on the left hand side. Click on the iPhone entry to select it and then click Save SHSH - this can take a few minutes.

Reinstalling usually doesn't fix wifi problems. If it's software related and caused by blacksn0w the best solution is to manually reflash 05.11.07 baseband. I provided detailed instructions explaining how to extract the required files from a 3.1.2 ipsw aw while ago.

It sounded like you have a new bootrom device, if so I would stay away from 4.2.1 for now. If you have a 4.1 SHSH and access to pwnagetool, I would use pwnagetool custom IPSW to get to 4.1

    Olethros,

The following is what I got back from TinyUmbrella
    iPhone3GS 3.1 (7C144)
    iPhone3GS 3.1.2 (7D11)
    iPhone3GS 3.1.3 (7E18)
    iPhone3GS 4.0 (8A293)
    iPhone3GS 4.0.1 (8A306)
    iPhone3GS 4.0.2 (8A400)
    iPhone3GS 4.1 (8B117)
    iPhone3GS 4.2.1 (8C148a)
    iPhone3GS 4.3b2 (8F5153d)

I used F0recast to determine the my iphone doe NOT require to be Tethered and therefore not new bootrom (Phone was purchased late Oct 2009).

So knowing this, what exactly can I do and more importantly exactly how I can I do it

    Thanks!

    The SHSH news is good
Don't trust f0recast - it's a guide only - it never can be 100% correct, the only sure way is to put your phone into DFU and check the reported bootrom version.

I followed the instructions and the following is what is shown

Device Instance ID (there was no Device Instance Path)
    "USB\VID_05AC&PID_1227\5&38C8E674&0&5"

    USBView tool show the following
    [iBoot-359.3]

But I'm positive that the bootrom is the version that does not require tethering.

Yes it is old bootrom. Strange that some windows users are reporting no "device instance path" - do you use a non english version of windows?

The only software solution to wifi problems (especially a blacksn0w related wifi problem) is to reflash the same 05.11.07 baseband

The baseband files and the updater utility is contained in the 3.1 or 3.1.2 IPSW for 3GS and for 3G. I have explained previously how to extract this and reflash the baseband.

We can't link directly to a download location for this baseband file. (as it's illegal for us to redistribute parts of an IPSW without Apple's permission).

The following posts explain how to extract the files you need.

Remember that there are several causes for wifi problems on the 3G and 3GS, most of these are hardware related.
There is no real risk that you can make things worse by trying to reload the same baseband version.

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 3GS (3.1.2, 5.11.07 baseband) which was locked to AT & T, I still have AT & T's Sim with me. I did the jailbreak using blackra1n (Windows version) and unlocking using blacksn0w. I put a Vodafone Sim (UK) in it and it worked well for 2 months although I saw a significant decrease in battery performance, I had to turn-off 3G, Location Services features. I had frequently done "reset network settings" and toggling the "Airplane Mode" but never had this problem but couple of days ago the phone froze and I turned on airplane mode and now its stuck at Geohot's image (first apple logo, usb-itunes and then Geohot's image) and keeps doing the same.

I did the Fix 2 and it has been running for 32hours and still doing the same thing. Upon reading carefully, I noticed one deviation from what was told my n1ckn4m3, I don't have my itunes open.

I am looking at a solution which does not involve restoring/upgrading unless thats the only solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated and many thanks in advance.

I know this is a long shot but does anyone have a copy of this still floating around on their hard drive that they could upload?
I'm in a bit of a pickle with a 3GS on 3.1.2 which is stuck at the Apple logo on boot after the blacksn0w unlock, and recovering the data on the phone is very important.
I've tried mounting as a ramdisk which worked for me on an iPhone 4 before, but I can't get it to work with the 3GS... and since SHSH blobs aren't saved for this phone, if I understand correctly, means I'm stuck with restoring to 5.1.1... and thus doing the custom IPSW which doesn't overwrite the user data isn't going to be such a likely safe bet.
