RE: your last post: Originally I jailbroke with blackrain after activating legitimately (it's a uk phone that I bought from apple on the o2 network).
1. what are the risks involved? if I de-hacktivate, is there a chance that the phone will become unjailbroked and is there a chance that i might need to restore? (I have valuable data/apps that can't be backed-up so I can't afford to restore!)
2. is there any way to do this without ssh'ing into the phone. I have a pc and use iphone explorer so I guess I'm asking if this is just a process of renaming and copying files...
Thanks for all of your help so far...
By the way.. if you originally purchased from o2, they do offer official unlocking (cost depends on whether you have finished your contract or not, also I don't know if they offer it for prepaid iPhones)

An extra step of safety might be to use a copy of the com.apple.mobile.lockdown.plist in /tmp and load that - to confirm things worked... by doing that - if something goes wrong you can reboot your phone and it will revert back to the com.apple.mobile.lockdown.plist in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
I only have a factory unlocked iPhone and a 2G that can't activate legitimately so I can't test your scenario fully.
ldownloaded the neccesary ssh tools but used o2's online advisor to get it unlocked...paid £15..she said to connect it to itunes and then it came up with "slide for emergency"..i restarted the phone while it was still plugged in and the phone now works on uk t-mobile (although itunes did say it wanted to check for a carrier update, i obviously said no!)
Thank you so much for all of your help...this has been such an education...hope my posts help others in the same situation...:-)
It is normally 100% safe to check for a "carrier update". Carriers can change settings like MMS servers and so on via a "carrier update". That kind of setting is very useful to have. The carrier updates can even come over the air (ie not through iTunes) now.

A carrier update is very different to an iOS update. (say to iOS 4.1 or something)
I have this problem, but i have not been able to solve this.
I have a 3GS with 3.1.2 with all the SHSH files saved (i allways pressed the "make my life easier"). Its an ATT phone and i am using it in spain so its hacktivated. It has the last baseband.
Now its stuck on the apple logo and the spin stops and after a few minutes restarts.
I have learned a way to get to the restore mode and is this:
apple logo is on, then, i press and hold at the same time the home and power button until it restarts and the apple logo shows again. when the apple logo is on the screen again, i keep pressing the home button but i stop pressing the power button.
After keep pressing the home button for about 2 minutes, the restore mode is activated. When i get to the restore mode, i am able to run blacksn0w, and the geohotz screen is on my iphone but when it tries to reboot, the spin stops on the geohotz logo too :S
I have no idea how to fix this, and i need to save the sms file before restoring.
Could someone help me? thank you. PD: thanx olethros for your help i hope to solve this soon.
EDIT: to give more info about how i arrive to this situation:
I was sending a picture with wifi and suddenly it lost the wifi signal and the carrier signal. When i saw that, i opened sbsettings and i switched off the "3G" and the "Phone" button. Above those buttons, the circles went spinning and after a few minutes they froze, and the iphone rebooted itself and then got stuck there.
Now, it has ran out of battery and it keeps rebooting when the battery is charged 10%, but it allways does the same: No battery, charges, apple logo frozen, the blackra1n in waiting for device, and again the same. Is there anything i did wrong or i should just wait?
So I got blacksn0w and had it run through my iphone 3g after it restarted, the apple sign comes on and the loading circle thingy starts running, but after 20 seconds, the loading thingy freezes up. i can turn it on and off just fine but everytime i turn it on, it goes right back to being frozen, i even drained all the power out and recharged it but the same thing happens.
anyone know what to do?
Today one apple guy told me that he read once in a website that while the apple logo is on and the spin hasn't showed up the file system is accessable. Is it true? Is there any way to acces to the file system in that short time?
If this is true, the only way would be via AFC

What do i do? The itunnel says that i can use it if i write iphone_tunnel 22 22 and the devide id. How can i know the device id?

iphone_tunnel v2.0 for Mac

Restore mode hack by msft.guy ((rev 4))
Usage: iphone_tunnel [<iPhone port> <Local port> [Device ID, 40 digit]]
Example: iphone_tunnel 22 9876 0123456...abcdef
Default ports are 22 22
Waiting for device...
There it gets...
edit: if you look i used the rev 4 which is the one used in the video. If i use the rev61 or 71 it doesnt wait for the device.
Please, tell me what to do to establish a connection and save the data please. I think that i am close.
Ok i got it. I have been able to do all that is in the video of msftguy
YouTube - iPhone SSH ramdisk walkthrough
I have been able to establish a connection with putty but i have no idea how to acces the files.
Can you explain to me what to do? When th video finishes, it writes kill 1 in putty. WHen i do that, the iphone reboots and gets stuck again in the apple logo.
