I Need some clarification before using Blackr1n

I have the iPhone 3GS 3.1 05.11.07

1) Is there any thing that needs to be backed-up from the iPhone before carrying out the JB?

2) Any other steps that need to be carried out before JB incase something was to go wrong?

3) Regarding the option to install Cydia, Rock & Icy - Is there any reason to not install them all? What are the pros & cons of each?

4) Is there away to go back to virgin iPhone again, that is, to make the iPhone back to exactly what i was before the JB?

5) Anything else I should know?

1) Always BACK UP thru itunes before anything. then you can always step back to that point if you need to later.. better safe than sorry

3) Install Cydia and Rock only. I found installing Cydia and Icy creates an error that requires restore.

4) Yes. Full Restore in iTunes. Factory settings.. back up will put you back to where you started. no jb residue

5) update to 3.1.2 first then back up, then blackra1n

I have a 3gs and blackra1n worked flawlessly, took about 1 min to run

Regarding your statement about upgrading to 3.1.2 before JB - Is there a reason for doing that? The reason I was wanting to stay on 3.1 was to prevent any further lockdown of the iPhone with 3.1.2. And so you are saying that there is no advantages to staying at 3.1, right?

3.1.2 is quite a minor update so there is no real extra lockdown by apple in this firmware.

One very important thing to note though:

All 3GS users should make sure they request their ECID SHSH using Cydia as early as possible.

For 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd gen, the firmware must be verified as legitimate and signed by Apple during the restore process. This verification and signature uses a unique device specific value called ECID. Every phone has a different ECID. The combination signature hash is called ECID SHSH.

When for example 3.2 is release Apple will start rejecting requests to sign 3.1 so you cannot restore to 3.1 any more. This has already happened with 3.0 and 3.0.1.

However if you have backed up the unique ECID SHSH blob for a specific OS (say 3.1) then you can always restore back to the official Apple firmware for that OS on your iPhone.

Cydia has a feature to do this called "make your life easier" it is on the first page you see when you load Cydia.

If you agree to let Cydia do this it will keep a backup of your ECID SHSH blob for each firmwares that Apple still allows to be signed. So the earlier you agree to let cydia make your life easier, the more chance you have the ability to restore to older firmwares if you have a problem after updating to a newer firmware.

You can also do this manually yourself with a tool called firmware umbrella but I recommend using Cydia as a starting point - it is much easier.

I have now upgraded to 3.1.2 and will be using pwnagetool to JB, although I might wait and see what Blackra1n RC2 brings to the table tomorrow. :)

bad idea, takes a LOOONG time, because it restores firmware, and forces you to resync everything

use blackra1n, its blazing fast!

Pwnage Tool is best for people who can unlock, your 5.11 cant be unlocked anyway, no point to using Pwnage

BlackRa1n does not hacktivate, which might be important to some users, even if they can't get unlock, they at least have an iPod Touch.

I agree, Pwnage Tool can Hacktivate, blackra1n cannot

blackra1n is only for people with legitimate SIM cards, such as from ATTUSA

Blackra1n can jailbreak (well) and hacktivate (buggily) it cannot unlock, Blacksn0w however can only unlock. You can get blacksn0w from Cydia or by installing blackra1n.

Please do not confuse the two. Blacksn0w is just bundled as a link within blackra1n.
