Don't take this advice. Blackra1n requires you to spend way too much time after jailbreak installing things that are in the redsn0w and pwnagetool jailbreak. If you forget to do this and later stuff up your phone by installing something incompatible from cydia. Well you have only one choice -restore.Quote:

Look at geohot's history of hardcoding patched in jailbreaks then abandoning them when the next OS release comes around.

Really useful when you accidentally install something from cydia that partly screws up your phone. Most people don't install OpenSSH (which is about the only other way to fix your phone when it is partly screwed)

on redsn0w a version of cydia is included in the jailbreak, it simply needs to do some initial config and update itself. Much faster than blackra1n method which has to first open ra1n app on phone, select cydia then download cydia from the net, initial config and finally download updates from net.- Accidentally deleting rain.app
How do you reinstall this if you delete it? What happened if you did not install cydia/blacksn0w before deleting this and then later needed one or both of these?
Solution, use redsn0w - select already pwned and install Cydia. Then install blacksn0w from Cydia.- Support?
Geohot has yet again abandoned the iPhone hacking community. His tools are released, work for a short while with the current firmware then they almost always break because he took programming short cuts
Devteam have released a jailbreak for every iPhone OS so far. Plus they have released unlocks that continue to work - if you follow their instructions on careful safe upgrading. Blacksn0w needs to be hacked to work with 3.1.3, purplesn0w - that's long forgotten.
Ultrasn0w, well it uses the same payload that yellowsn0w used, that was way back with OS 2.2. The only difference is the hole used to inject the payload. As Apple closes off holes, the devteam find new ones and keep on pushing through the same unlock payload - which has been tested on many networks, does not screw up wifi and gets small improvements where necessary.- browsing for an IPSW?

Did either continue to work with the next x.x.1 update from Apple? Nope.

Blackra1n lacked hackivation for the first two releases. When it did come, it was done a strange way that caused problems with troubleshooting. Support/documentation - see the support section earlier.

Package management is complex, handling correct installation of dependencies and so on is not as simple as it seems. Cydia, while slow - has always done this right.
Rock, like icy and even installer.app before it - advertised speed as a feature, however this came at the expense of reliability. The jailbreaking scene is small compared to the legit scene, having too many package installers, especially when they don't work well.
Rock.app has only one great feature, try before you buy. That could have been added into Cydia instead.
Plenty of examples where rock.app has screwed the user's phone (either because they had both rock and cydia installed at the same time, or simply bad package management)
Solution - stick to the one known working package app - Cydia. Which recently got a speed boost.
What is blackra1n good for?
- Kickstarting new bootrom 3GS after they are reset. This is a case where the browsing for an IPSW is a pain. Especially when the phone is stuck in such a situation that it needs to be drained of power before it can be kickstarted. Blackra1n excels at this.
I have blackra1n and have had to apply a patch for PushFix to get youtube to work already.
Is redsn0w still a beta?

Honestly, i've only use blacra1n 1 time each on my iphone 2g, 3g and 3gs. And I only used it in order to help people with problem. I don't even bother to run blackra1n icon on the phone. As soon as I finished testing it, I restore my iphone to stock fw and jailbreak again using redsn0w :).
Blackra1n is only good for using it to tether-boot :P
No doubt, geohot is incredibly talented. However, he leaves the community in limbo. For example, his blacksn0w unlock creates wifi problem and possibly corruption. He knows what it is but refused to fix it. His blacksn0w works only on OS = 3.1.2 where as Dev Team ultrasn0w works on OS = 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3
