    Default Please advice on jailbreak

    Hi everyone,

I am very new to this field, tried to read up, but would like to make sure that I am doing the right thing:

I just got my (first) iphone 3GS 16GB (locked to T-Mobile).

I would like to Jailbreak the phone and found out that it runs 3.1.2 with Baseband 05.11.07 - which means it qualifies for Blackra1in (correct?)

I am not sure if i need an unlock at all since I will be using the phone with the contract that I have.

I activated the phone via iTunes using the T-Mobile SIM (which I hope wasn't a mistake)

The phone itself seems to be produced in week 48 (tried to read this from the serial number), does this change anything in regards to the bootloader?

If I jailbreak this using Blackra1n...will this be a tethered jb and require me to break again every time I boot? What happens on booting a JB phone without a PC? Does it not start? Does it start but the apps will be broken?

Could you give me any advice on the necessary next steps I should take to jailbreak the phone without breaking the phone?

    many thanks!

I jb with blackrain and never had any problems with it, well right now it's been crashing everynow and then but I highly doubt that has anything to do with blackrain. My phone has been jb for months and it's ran very well. I was timid to let my phone die because I thought blackrain was A tethered program but it's not. So if you use B.R then you should be good. I haven't had to
re-install it once. You won't lose any of your apps if your phone dies and whatever. But do read up on some of the apps that are in cydia that will help you keep your iPhone from getting problems. I am in love with my iPhone since jailbreaking it.

Week 48 - 99% chance you have a tethered jailbreak. (no matter what jailbreak tool you use). A tethered jailbreak means that you cannot restart the iPhone without first connecting it to a computer and re-running redsn0w or blackra1n. The phone is completely non functional until you connect it to a computer. Keep this in mind when deciding if you want to jailbreak.

No the baseband has nothing to do with the need to use blackra1n or not.
For a jailbreak, I recommend you use redsn0w 0.9.2 for the initial jailbreak and then use blackra1n for kickstarting the tethered boot. This is because blackra1n is bad at initial jailbreak but is really good at kickstarting the tethered boot. Don't listen to the people who say that they have never had a problem with blackra1n. The reality is they have not yet encountered a problem that could have been avoided (or fixed easily) if they had jailbroken with redsn0w instead.

You don't need an unlock as long as you stay with t-mobile. If you ever want to unlock, you need to use blacksn0w to unlock. I suggest you use blacksn0w RC2, which adds a tweak to load blacksn0w a bit later so you avoid a conflict between unlock and wifi - which often ended up with people losing wifi after loading blacksn0w.

Just to clarify. The tethered jailbreak depends on what bootrom chip your iPhone has not what jailbreak program you use.

You can easily check which bootrom version you have without needing to jailbreak
