I have an iPhone 8g 3G 3.1.2 I think the firmware was 4.8 something. I downloaded blackra1n & it installed ok then I clicked on install Cydia it seemed to be ok then my screen went black. When I push the home button or power button I get the silver apple icon but that's all. after a few seconds it goes black again. I tried holding both down & nothing happens just goes to black screen again.

What happened ? How do I fix this ?

The fast solution is to reinstall 3.1.2. jailbreak and unlock using PwnageTool.

Ok so I assume this is the correct file to download ? iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw About 242 megs ? If not can you please provide a link ? I'm very new to this, I'm in Indonesia & the internet connections are very slow here so any detailed help would be greatly appreciated so I don't spend 4 hours downloading the wrong huge files.

Yes that is the correct file, you also need pwnagetool 3.1.4 or 3.1.5

Don't use restore the file you downloaded. You need to transform that into a custom IPSW via pwnagetool. iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.1.3 Using PwnageTool (Mac) This guide refers to 3.1.3 but the same instructions will work for 3.1.2 with pwnagetool 3.1.5 and the iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw file.

Also don't use blackra1n or redsn0w if you have baseband 04.26.08 (which is what I guess you meant when you wrote "firmware is 4.8")
