Jailbreak Questions
iPhone 3Gs (White) 3.1.2 (7D11)
Baseband 05.11.07
1) Are there any signs of geohotz or anyone else releasing and non-tethered jailbreak? If so is there an eta?
2) If I was to jailbreak my iPhone with blackra1n RC3 to see if I have have untethered or tethered bootrom and it was tethered could I plug my iPhone back into iTunes and hit the restore button and would it go back to as it was (not jailbroken)?
3) If I jailbroken and it was untethered, and I plugged it into iTunes would my apps/ music/ etc that I have purchaced from the iTunes store sync onto my iPhone or does it have to be done different due to the jailbreak?
4) When downloading apps from Cydia will they be backed up in iTunes or as above on an alternative syncing software?
Sorry if I didn't introduce the topic, but I like to be straight to the point!
Thank you in advance for reading and trying to answer my questions. I am new to jailbreaking so please use newbie (noob) language and please excuse any spelling mistakes.

Geohot is hacking the PS3 at the moment, no ETA, ChronicDev team have some techniques that may enable a semi tethered jailbreak they were frustrated by the amount of users who jailbreak to pirate games
Twitter / chronic dev team: i rest my case, example 1 ...
Whether they complete this or are actively working on this is unknown right now.

You do not need to jailbreak to find out what bootrom you have. Look at the following link.
PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X
To answer your actual question, putting the iPhone in DFU mode (http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm), clicking the restore button in iTunes then setting your iPhone up as new will remove all trace of jailbreak.

Yes that would work fine. This will work tethered or untethered, with legitimate purchases and music/videos you have ripped yoruself that are in the supported formats.

They are not backed up anywhere. There are some Cydia apps which allow you to backup what you have installed via Cydia though.

Edit: One more question(s)

If I did an untethered jailbreak, would there be many problems/ bugs? By it my iPhone being untethered jailbroken would this mean each time I reboot or the battery runs out I would have to connect it to a computer and re-jailbreak it? If I did reboot/ it runs out of battery would it be non functional if I just connected to main power supply i.e stuck on a the 'connect to iTunes' screen
You can't do an untethered jailbreak right now. Maybe in the future if someone finds a new exploit an untethered jailbreak will be possible for your model iPhone.
There is a huge difference in meaning between (tethered and untethered) I think you meant to write tethered jailbreak in the "One more question" section, so I will answer based on the assumption that was what you meant to write.
If you jailbreak your iPhone with blackra1n RC3, each time the battery goes flat or your iPhone crashes or you deliberately restart or shut down the iPhone the inbuilt security of the iPhone refuses to let it continue to boot because it detects that it is jailbroken. It would be non functional as an iPhone at this point (until you connect it to a computer)
You will need to connect it to a computer and re-run blackra1n to get it to start again. This is NOT re-jailbreaking the iPhone, blackra1n detects the iPhone is already jailbroken and kickstarts the iPhone past the inbuilt security check that was stopping bootup.
If you put the iPhone in DFU mode and restored it with an original apple ipsw the jailbreak would be removed and the iPhone would boot normally again. This would also remove any applications and unlock installed via jailbreak.

Depends on when your 3GS was made and what bootrom it has.
Check this guide: PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X
