    Default iPhone crashing.... Help

I have a 3gs 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackrain. Ive installed some themes and some other things. Nothing that hasn't been from a trusted source. Anyways my phone has completely crashed. The screen goes blank and then goes to the apple loader screen and just stays. I have to do a manual shut down and then it's fine. Any ideas?

Need a little more information to effectively troubleshoot -- how frequently does this happen? Does it happen in response to any specific activity you're taking on the device? When it reboots, does the phone come up normally or do you receive an error?

It's happened 3 times as of now, seems to be once every other week or so. It just seems to do it whenever it wants. I could be opening up a text or looking on safari, or closing out a game. It seems completely random. I've looked to see my available memory because I thought maybe it was getting really low but that wasn't it. And when it crashes I have no warning or no error message when I have to reboot.

Was your phone ever restored and configured from a backup? Also, you mention it's a 3GS on 3.1.2 -- are you using a tethered or untethered jailbreak? I'd assumed untethered since you say that when you power cycle it, it comes back on, but thought I'd ask to clarify anyway.

No my phone hasn't been restored and yes I believe blackrain is an untethered jailbreak. I've been reading up on iPhones for a while and it seems that I haven't really come across too many posts about my problem. It's acting like there's too much going on at once and it just can't handle it, but usually I have one program going on at a time.

Did you ever have any problems with Winterboard that would have led you to have to install and uninstall it to make it work? Alternately, did you ever have any trouble with MobileSubstrate installing that may have required a reinstall? Sometimes they can get themselves into a less than pleasant state.

If it was my phone and I had an SHSH on file for 3.1.2 (I do, do you?), I would make a backup in iTunes, ensure my contacts were sync'd, wipe the device, restore 3.1.2 using the firmware umbrella method or Saurik's server and a custom firmware made with PwnageTool, and pull the sqlite database for my SMS history and call history out of the backup iTunes made and put it on the new phone (would NOT restore from the backup). From there I'd reinstall the Cydia apps I needed and do a full sync.

I'd be very surprised if that didn't solve the problem. It may sound like a lot of work, but for something I want to "Just Work" when I pull it out of my pocket and turn it on, I don't feel it's too much work.

I haven't had any problems installing anything, I think I'll give it more time and if it doesn't get better. I'll restore. I really don't want to go that route lol

I don't blame you -- it's not my favorite of solutions but whenever I have sporadic issues that I can't lock down the cause of, it's my 'nuke from orbit and retry' failsafe .

Good luck! Keep us in the loop with what you do and find out, especially if you get any closer to locking down what specific app is exacerbating this behavior for you.
