Yes that should work.
Pwangetool gives a more stable jailbreak with less problems. If you are on windows and are already running 3.1.2 jailbreak with blakcra1n then restore with a custom ipsw created with pwnagetool.

If you are on mac, all you need is pwnagetool 3.1.4

hey i have a similar(same?) case -
its activated and i just terminated the at&t contract. i've never jailbroken and unlocked before.

iphone 3gs
3.1.2 w/ 05.11.07 and 359.3 ( not 359.3.2)

what would be a safe way to follow - pwnage or blackra1n
blackra1n's instability with wifi scares me ... as much as i want to make phone calls, i want to use the wifi too.

any suggestions are welcome.

i'm on os x 10.5.8.

I would recommend pwnagetool to jailbreak and blacksn0w to unlock.

Because you are on OS X, you can jailbreak your 3GS directly via pwnagetool 3.1.4

To unlock you have only blacksn0w as a choice because you are running baseband 05.11.07. Blacksn0w is 100% reversible.

The wifi problem cannot really be attributed to blackra1n or blacksn0w, it is definitely Apple's bug/problem. My theory is that it is related to 05.11.07 baseband (but not everyone is impacted) and the fact that blackra1n jailbreak encourages users to restore to OS 3.1.2 first (which will upgrade the baseband to 05.11.07) is why there is such a strong correlation between blackra1n and wifi problems.

Well, a test case to prove/disprove that would be if -
1.its an original 3.1.2 ( not jailbroken) -
now i jailbreak it using one of pwnage.
2. does wifi work?
now i unlock it with blacksn0w
3. does wifi work?

Since wifi works before on the orginal one, not jailbroken yet - we can conclude -

If wifi doesn't work pwnage - > implies fault lies with the jailbreaking?

If wifi works after pwnage but not after blacksn0w -> implies unlocking is faulty?

lemme know if i'm not thinking of some possible test case?

Yeah that sounds OK.

However it may be that only some hardware exhibits this problem in conjunction with the right software combination.

Geohot (who created blacksn0w) says that he cannot reproduce the wifi problems on the test devices he has.

onto blacksn0w now - there's only one way to find out

Check your GPS as well, it should be fine but just check it anyway.
