Unhappy How can I upgrade iphone 3G 3.1.2 Firmware 05.11.07

I read every other posts but couldn't find a secure answer, yet. Is there a possibility to upgrade my iphone 3G to any higher version other than 3.1.2 ? I purchased my iphone from an At&t shop in US and when I was deployed overseas, I had to unlock it to use.

Has been almost 2.5 years and my iphone still stays where it is. Many applications are not working.

Please lead me to upgrade my 3.1.2 firmware 05.11.07 iphone 3G.

    Regards.

Download the 4.2.1 IPSW for iPhone 3G, use PwnageTool (download from blog.iphone-dev.org) create a custom 4.2.1 IPSW, put the phone in DFU mode and restore.

Thanks a ton for the quick reply. But I don't have a Mac to use PwnageTool. Is there an alternative to create a custom 4.2.1 IPSW? Or can I find a secure one?

    Thanks.

    Sorry for bothering you...

I downloaded the ipsw file as iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.zip for iphone 3G but sn0wbreeze says that this is not a valid IPSW. I also tried to change its extension but it didn't accept, either. The file is 322MB big. I downloaded the file from iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download

Do you have any idea? What am I doing wrong?

Your browser probably tried to unzip for you or something. Try changing the extension to .ipsw. If that doesn't work, re-dowload using another browser (Firefox or Chrome should be fine).

    Thanks a million!!! Now I have a 4.2.1 and modem firmware 05.11.07 iphone 3G.

I see why you are a respected member.

P.S. I unlocked my sim card by using ultrasnow (installed from Cydia>Manage>Sources and it covered everything)

Ok, so I (think I) followed the steps you described and I ended up with an upgraded Iphone 3g (4.2.1) but the baseband changed to 05.15.04. I lost all my music, apps and Cydia so now I don't know whether I am unlocked and jailbroken or not. Previously I was on 3.1.2 and 05.11.07. Where did I go wrong? Can I recover?

You did not follow the steps described, as your baseband was updated.

Did you make your own custom IPSW? If so which tool did you use? Pwnagetool, sn0wbreeze? Did you check that the option to prevent baseband update was enabled? Did you restore to stock IPSW instead of custom IPSW by mistake?
Regardless of how it happened, the damage is done - that baseband 05.15.04 cannot be unlocked.

Your music and apps you need to re-sync from your computer via iTunes.
Any settings, game high scores or personal data can only be retrieved from an iTunes backup (assuming you synchronized the phone prior to restoring it and the backup option was enabled). I strongly advise you browse to the directory where the backup is stored and make a ZIP file of the directory (as iTunes has a bad habit of erasing the backup when you set the phone up as new)

if unlock is important to you - then you have two options (neither are great)
    • If your iPhone 3G is very old (purchased new in July 2008) then there is a (small) chance you can downgrade the baseband again. use TinyUmbrella to check what baseband bootloader version you have.
    • Otherwise, you need to look at Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle for a solution.

Thanks so much for the prompt response. Yes, I did download the custom ipsw using sn0wbreeze but I was not aware of the option to prevent baseband update. I did not babysit all the firmware update (was in and out) so maybe I missed it. Appreciate the tip re TinyUmbrella, will try. We are with Rogers (Canada). Again, thanks.
