Yeah so I picked up the phone last night and it was looking all good, guy said he had Blackrain on it and thats how it was unlocked/jailbroken. He tried a settings reset but after it his contacts/messages were still there so he did a full reset and sent me on my way. After a few hours I realized something must be wrong so I sent him an email and came here. The phone is stuck on a black screen with a silver Apple logo and sometimes theres a little loading circle below it. The 4th and 5th serial numbers are 4L if that matters. Please let me know if theres anything else you need to help me. This is my first iPhone (first Apple product altogether actually ) and I'm excited to get it working properly.

Okay so you are on windows.

Sounds like he did an erase all content and settings on the iPhone. You mention blackra1n so I assume it was running 3.1.2 and the latest radio baseband.

Follow the section in this document entitled "Restoring your iPhone or iPod touch"

Backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone and iPod touch software

Then use blackra1n to jailbreak via this guide. iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone, iPod Using BlackRa1n [Windows]

I have a question before I start following through on these steps though. In the iClarified guide I see this:

"The BlackRa1n jailbreak will work with the latest 3.1.2 firmware; however, it will not hacktivate your iPhone. This means that if you are not on an official Apple approved carrier BlackRa1n cannot activate it."

Does this mean the phone will not be unlocked? I don't have a sim card right now and when I get one it will be pay-as-you-go. Should I still follow these guides?

edit: Also you are right, I am on windows, and he did a "Reset all content and settings". Also he mentioned something about using "Let it snow" when I got my new sim.

Blackra1n can now hacktivate, but it's pretty bare bones. Pwnagetool has better hacktivation.
You really should perform the jailbreak with a sim card inserted, it makes things simpler. Probably works without, I have not tested it.

Well I went through all the steps and got it set up fine! Pretty much everything I've tried works except Youtube which says it cant connect whenever I try and view a video or open the app.

edit: Did a search and found the Push Fix and youtube works fine now

hey i know this is a really old post, but i came across it since im having the same problem as well!

i bought a second hand iphone, and in order to reset the contacts on the iphone, i had to go general > reset > all contents...

this resulted as explained above, a black screen with the silver apple logo, eventually a circle loading which freezes as well.. i wana know how to jail break it... when i connect it to iTunes, it doesn't read it as a connected device..

any help is greatly appreciated! thanks

Sometimes erase all content and settings can cause this...

Is your iPhone a 3G? If so.. put it into DFU mode http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/53930-4.htm#post559682 and shift-click restore to 3.1.2 downloaded from here http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm

Don't try to restore to 4.0 or 4.1 - be sure to use the shift-click (option-click) restore in iTunes, as if you just click on restore - you will end up with 4.1 and that is probably a bad thing. (if you want jailbreak or unlock)

If you have a 3GS or iPhone 4, we need more information to help you.
