    Default Bought Jaibroken "New" Iphone

    Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum and te iphone. Yesterday I bought a "new??" unlocked iphone
    3G 8 GB.

I live in India and the authorized carriers are airtel & Vodaphone. The phone is not factory unlocked. When i started it, i noticed it had balackra1n & Cydia. Now I had no clue what these were until i googled the.

I am worried that is my iphone a stolen phone? I checked the IMEI number with the online database and it seems to be valid. I am OK with the fact that it is not factory unlocked but is using this phone illegal? Since i bought it from the "grey markey" there is not bill and warranty.

Q1. My main concern is that this phone should not be stollen one. How do i make sure of this? From the look of it, te phone seems brand new.

Q2. What if i travel to the US and take this with me to use with normal GSM sim in the US? Will I get into trouble?

    Please help.

    Regards,
    Arshish

The model number indicates what country the phone was originally sold in.
It is hard to tell if your phone is stolen or not, especially in india.

Blackra1n and cydia do not mean the phone is locked to a specific carrier. Check in Cydia if blacksn0w or ultrasn0w are installed. If they are then the phone is not factory unlocked. The model number also indicates if it is carrier locked or not.

    blacksn0w / ultrasn0w are not installed.

Isn't there any imei check? I did check on International Numbering Plans, 2001-2010 and this is what it returned.

    Type Allocation Holder Apple
Mobile Equipment Type Apple iPhone 3G
    GSM Implementation Phase 2/2+
    IMEI Validity Assessment Very likely
Est. Date of Range Issuance After Jan 2003
Reporting Body PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB)
    Primary Market North America
Legal Basis for Allocation PCS Type Certification

    1. Are there any checks I can do? As I mentioned the phone does look flawless.
    2. Isnt there any where I can check if me IMEI has been reported / blacklisted as stolen?
    3. Is there any way to chek if the IMEI has altered.

I also checked on the apple support site with the serial number and it says the phone needs to be activated with th carrier before it can show warranty information.

Model number tells you what country the phone came from.

IMEI won't tell you this. IMEI on a 3G can't be changed via software so it's unlikely it has been changed.

    Hmm.. Interesting.

How do I use the model number to determine to which carrier my phone could have been previously locked?

My concern is that if it was a USA - AT&T locked phone and if for some reason it crashes and i need to upgrade to 3.1.3 then it would get locked to a carrier that does not operate in India!!!

Should I install OpenSSH just in case?

Is it safe to post details here like the Model number, iccid number, serial number? would that provide some useful info?

Are Unlocking & Jailbreaking both not possible at the moment for 3.1.3 or just jailbreaking? When I called the guy I bought it from he said if I updated to 3.1.3 the phone would be a useless brick and the sim will not work!

No problems with model number. Serial number you should just post the first 5 digits. ICCID relates to your SIM card so you have no need to post that.

If your model number ends in LL/A then it is locked to AT/T.

    Model Number is: MB489B
First 5 digits of Serial Number is: 87003

Would this be an India Vodafone / Airtel iphone?

Also, would you advise I install OpenSSH on the phone just in case I am forced to restore after a crash? I read in another post that for the 3GS if the baseband is upgraded then the phone cannot be unlocked. Is this a danger for the 3G also?

This phone is intended for sale in Ireland.

As any phone that is stolen or claimed as lost/damaged under insurance in EU ends up imei blacklisted in the whole EU it is possible this phone is such a phone and has been "rebirthed" in India

Could also be 100% legit - you never know. The only way to be sure would be if there was a public imei blacklist database for Ireland/EU

Depends on the type of crash. Can help with some situations, not all.

If you install openssh change your root and mobile passwords to something only you know at the same time!!!!

This IMEI blacklist Db, is there any site where I can access it and get this checked for sure?

The thing is I have bought this as a gift for someone and just does not feel right. Its not like a paid any less for the phone... I practically paid the full price!
