The thing is I have bought this as a gift for someone and just does not feel right. Its not like a paid any less for the phone... I practically paid the full price!
The IMEI blacklist DB that is shared for all of EU is only accessible to carriers and some third party companies.

There is no guarantee that this is stolen even if it appears in the blacklist. They can also blacklist phones where the original owner has not paid the remainder of their contract.

    Hi Again!

Ive been reading about blackra1n & Redsn0w. As i mentioned earlier I have Brackra1n on my IPhone 3G 3.1.2. Everything seems to be working fine at the moment.

Is it recommended to remove blackra1n & then use redsn0w / ultrasn0w? Or do I follow "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Also what precautions do i need to take in case my phone crashes such that i don't need to restore to 3.1.3? backups? copies?

Ultimately, it is recommended that you rejailbreak using redsn0w or PwnageTool as blackra1n misses on several key areas:

    1) afc2 service is not configured to allow root filesystem access to the phone when blackra1n is used -- this stops iFunbox, DiskAid, and similar from providing filesystem access.

    2) Push certificate hack for hacktivation by blackra1n is extremely hit or miss -- a lot of people have problems with push if they are using the phones on alternate carriers and need to use blackra1n for the hacktivation. PwnageTool does a much more thorough and complete job of jailbreaking and hacktivating.

As far as making sure you have a backup, there isn't much more to do other than to plug it in to iTunes and let it do a full backup of the device.

To ensure your phone can be downgraded to 3.1.2 again if anything happens, read the post here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f203/87785.htm

That post covers the TinyTSS / Firmware Umbrella method of ensuring you have the proper SHSH on file and getting a local copy of it. The problem here is that Apple is no longer signing 3.1.2 or earlier -- so if you don't have your SHSH on file now, you will only be able to get one for 3.1.3.

When you installed Cydia after using blackra1n, did you run Cydia and say Yes to its offer of making your life easier? If so, this requested and cached an SHSH for the OS that Apple was signing at that point -- hopefully you got a 3.1.2 SHSH on file during the time your phone was jailbroken initially. You can check this by running Cydia and seeing what it says is on file at the top of the loading screen.

If you do not have the 3.1.2 SHSH on file, you have to be extremely careful with what you do as you can leave yourself in an uncomfortable situation where the only way out is to restore a factory 3.1.3, thus upgrading your baseband to the currently not unlockable version, etc.

Well i got the phone with cydia on it from the begining. So i dont know if the SHSH is on file with Cydia for 3.1.2.

It says nothing on top ofthe loading screen and I cant find the make my life easier button either...

    How do i check this?

You don't need to worry about SHSH on the 3G. Just be careful to always upgrde with pwnagetool/custom IPSW to avoid accidentally updating the baseband.
