I downloaded Blackra1n last year when I bought my wife a new 3Gs iphone and everything has been great with no problems. But, last month I had to wipe her laptop clean and lost Blackra1n. She let it run down yesterday and now that it is powered back up it has the recovery screen showing. My problem is that I've gone to blackra1n,com and downloaded Blackra1n several times and everytime I try to open the progarm I get a error message that says that the ASL.dll was not found and the program shuts down. What can I do now? Is there anywhere else that I can get the program from?

Blackra1n is a poor jailbreak - it's developer has (mostly) abandoned the scene and no one is maintaining it. None of the negatives in blackra1n were fixed in the followup release limera1n.

If you are also using the blacksn0w unlock that was offered with blackra1n then you are sitting on a ticking timebomb. Ultrasn0w has long since replaced any need to use the baseband corrupting mess that was blacksn0w.

The error you are getting is an example of the lazy programming in blackra1n. Apple moved some of the iTunes files that blackra1n relies on and blackra1n broke. None of the other jailbreak tools broke - because they didn't take lazy shortcuts.

The fix for the error you are getting is to downgrade your iTunes (lower than 9.1). Other (not recommended) fixes are - potentially break iTunes by copying/moving some of the iTunes key files around, or use the unsupported blackbreeze.

The jailbreaking community has moved on from the mess that was blackra1n. If you managed to backup that phone's SHSH for iOS 4.1 - I would recommend that you (carefully) move to that version with the help of PwnageTool.

That is of course assuming you were bothered to install Cydia (not installed by default with blackra1n) and run it - then answer yes to the "make my life easier" question.

Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

old versions of iTunes can be downloaded from here: iTunes - The iPhone Wiki

Also, redsn0w 0.9.2 redsn0w 0.9.2 [iPhone Dev Team] can kickstart the boot process in the same way that blackra1n does - blackra1n is faster though.
