I have been reading about the 3GS with serial number digits of 940 and higher, blackrain can tethered jailbreak ONLY, correct?

once tethered jailbreak, assuming the 3GS has version 3.1.2 and baseband firmware of 05.11.07, can i then unlock it using blacksn0w?

going by the serial number is just an educated guess.
refurbish iphone 3gs has new serial number beyond 40 but has old bootrom.
To be absolutely sure of bootrom version, put phone in DFU mode and look for iboot version in system profiler (mac) or devicemanager (windows) under the usb section.

The answer to your question is yes.
