Default 3GS restore - regular case?

    Hello guys,
    I have a 3GS 32gb with fw 3.0, baseband 4.26.08, with jailbreak.
I don't know which jb method was used, and I don't know if it was factory unlocked, or unlocked by software.

I need to upgrade to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 and I am using iTunes 9.1.1.12.

In this case, where I don't know what jb was used, can I close my eyes and run blackra1n RC3? Is it the best option or should I restore with a custom ipsw?

If blackra1n is the best choice, which ipsw should I use? I'm afraid of upgrading the baseband to 05.12.01 and not being able to unlock it later.

    Thanks guys.

Custom IPSW (that you make yourself) is the only truly safe option.

I don't know how to make my own custom, so I think I'll have to wait for the 05.12.01 unlock...
But thanks for your reply Olethros!

If I use the pwnage tool to upgrade to 3.1.3 does it overwrites whatever was previously used to jb my cel? I mean, it doesnt matter which method is responsible for my current jb (ultrasn0w, pwnage, redsn0w)?
    Thanks!

Just to be very specific - so you are not confused about some things

You use pwnagetool to "restore" to 3.1.3 - If you choose the "check for update" or "update" button in iTunes - that will not work. You need to use the "restore" button.

    Also. don't confuse jailbreak (redsn0w, blackr1n, pwnagetool) with unlock (ultrasn0w, blacksn0w)

If you use pwnagetool - it will replace/overwrite the entire contents of the iPhone OS with a new jailbroken OS. It will NOT replace/upgrade your baseband - so once the restore is complete in iTunes and the iPhone boots up again - you can open Cydia and install ultrasn0w via Cydia to re-apply your unlock.

    OK, posting my results.

So this is what I was planning:
Restore to a 3.1.2 (since I don't have a mac to use pwnagetool for 3.1.3) and jb with redsn0w 0.9.4 and after that, go to cydia, install ultrasn0w and unlock.

    This is what happened:
iTunes is not allowing restore to previous firmwares and the hosts file trick is not working anymore, so I had to install umbrella 03.13.81. Pretty neat tool, that downloaded my blobs from cydia, changed itunes files and simulated the apple server for me, all very easy to use.
After that, I was able to restore.
Then, used redsn0w to jb. worked fine.
Then I installed ultrasn0w from cydia, rebooted and searching cel network forever...
I started to worry, I checked my baseband and my surprise is that it upgraded my baseband to 05.11.07. I didn't know it was going to upgrade it!! So I uninstalled ultrasn0w and rebooted. After that I installed blackra1n and it found the cel network...

    So my 2 surprises:
    - itunes needs umbrella to restore to a previous firmware
    - restoring upgrades the baseband.

Question is: how can you restore to 3.1.3 on mac without upgrading baseband to its latest still unlocked version?

Pwnagetool is the answer. It creates a custom IPSW that blocks baseband upgrade AND bypasses the SHSH requirement (which you had to solve with umbrella)

Which is why I advised you use it in the first place so you would not need to use the much more unreliable blacksn0w unlock.

    Oh well..
