Exclamation [3GS] Just bought it and got it, Help?

Hey there guys, I just bought a 3GS 16GB from eBay and got it today.

I don't know which firmware version its on, and its locked right now. (the owner was with AT&T so Im guessing its locked to AT&T)

I know that the bootrom version is iBoot-359.3 but thats pretty much all I know right now.

So my real question is, is there a way to find out in which firmware this phone is sitting on right now? I know that if its 3.1.3 I can't do absolutely nothing about it (JB,Unlock, etc) but maybe its not in 3.1.3?

    Thanks in advance.

Put it into recovery mode and use iRecovery. Run
    Code:
    iRecovery -s
You should see some text that looks like this:
    Code:
    BUILD_TAG: iBoot-636.66
    or
    Code:
    BUILD_TAG: iBoot-636.66.33
If it is the second one, then 3.1.3 has been loaded onto the device (at some point) - meaning probably impossible to jailbreak right now. If that is the case your only chance is 3.1.2 SHSH.

Also grab the ECID and use The Firmware Umbrella to see if the ECID for 3.1.2 is cached on Cydia (it's a long shot, but takes a minute to check)

So yeah, I am pretty much screwed.. however, you said "If that is the case your only chance is 3.1.2 SHSH." < Can you explain a little bit more? I was gone from the iPhone scene for quite sometime and I do not have a clue about what that means.

"Also grab the ECID and use The Firmware Umbrella to see if the ECID for 3.1.2 is cached on Cydia (it's a long shot, but takes a minute to check)" Again, what?

Anyways, Thanks for the help so far it has been REALLY Appreciated.

EDIT: I have my cellphone with Claro which is one of the official carries who have the iPhone.. so, is there a way to "unlock" this firmware through them? or is it locked specifically to AT&T ?

Read this Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik)
See PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X for how to get your ECID.

Also see Hack that Phone - iPhone 3G S: Restoring "forbidden" firmware steps 3-4 explain how to see if you have a 3.1.2 SHSH cached with Cydia

Step 1 explains (mac only) in more detail how to get your ECID.

The lock is specifically with AT&T - but it is actually Apple who implements the unlock. The carriers simply add your IMEI to an Apple database and if it all checks out after a few days, the unlock is issued through iTunes.

Each country or carrier has it's own model number so it is simple for Apple to check and block any backdoor attempts to add an AT&T iPhone.

Ok, now Im starting to understand this whole new thing Apple is doing.

Thanks for all the information. I'd like to try the "Hack that Phone" tutorial, but the download link for the Umbrella and TinySS are kinda broken, when I click on them the page that loads after tells me the file is set to private.

Btw, is it safe for me to try this guide in order to be able to downgrade the firmware and at least be able to actually enter to the phone OS? (I am stuck at the "Emergency Calls Only" lol.

You can find the latest download links to Umbrella/TinyTSS at The Firmware Umbrella

If you can use Umbrella to get a SHSH for 3.1.2 (because the previous owner requested on to be saved on Cydia) then you can downgrade to 3.1.2 and use it as an iPod touch.

I doubt this, the previous owner most likely sold it on ebay because they could not work out how to unlock/jailbreak it. Or they were a 100% legit AT&T customer who had no need to worry about backing up SHSH.

What Apple is doing is forcing 3GS owners to stay up to date with OS updates. This makes Apple's job easier with controlling unlock, selling App Store apps etc.

I'll give it a try. if it doesn't work I think I'll just have to wait 'till OS 4 comes out and then wait and see if the DevTeam releases something for us 3.1.3ers.

Anyways, Thanks a LOT for your help.
Keep up the outstanding work bro.

    Peace out!

Apparently this is my lucky day!

It found a file! 64KB and all!

I already did the guide, so the next step would be to download 3.1.2 and use PwnageTool to create a Custom firmware and then restore it with iTunes right? (I already have gs.apple.com set to localhost)

EDIT: I must of been drunk.. the file it found was 3.1.3.. when I select to search for 3.1.2 it doesn't find one. What would happen if I go on with it and use that 3.1.3 SHSH file? Im guessing it wouldn't work cause that 3.1.3 SHSH file would be handy if I install firmware 4.0 and would want to go back to 3.1.3.. just want to be sure if I understood this thing hehe

(on the other hand.. this is a good thing right? means that the previous owner already did it with Cydia and this phone has its file on load, so I am kinda "protected" for the future.. am I right?)

Apple is still signing 3.1.3 - so there is no problem getting a 3.1.3 SHSH (Cydia asks Apple if it can't find one in it's own database)

So no.. the previous owner did not back this up. (As I suspected)
Yes it is good to have this when 4.0 comes out.
