    Yes, it can backup to a network drive. The root directory of the network drive must have a file called ".com.apple.timemachine.supported" (empty is fine). You can create it by using the touch utility. I have read some reports that say it only worked when using AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) network shares and that it doesn't work with CIFS/SMB (e.g. Windows or Samba) shares. I haven't tested that so dunno if it is true.

    Command line:
    Code:
    $ defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
    $ touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported
    AppleScript Utility:

    The reason why is disabled by default is because the Airport extreme (the new one with 802.11n) has a weakness in the way it handles/writes files in harddisk connected to its USB port.
