I think you have missed the Disk utility part.
You must prepare your disk by using Disk utility (in the menu when booted on the dvd, right after the language selection).

The (very high level) overview of preparing a disk or partition for MacOS installation:
- Create the partition elsewhere. You can create a MacOS (HFS) partition (partition type af) using the GNU/Linux fdisk (very easy) or Windows' diskpart (pretty easy too.)
- Make sure the partition is a Primary patition
- Make sure the OSX Install DVD you're using supports your hard drive controller (SATA is always a point of contention here)
- Before running through MacOS Install, boot up the DVD and open up Disk Utility. If your drive is detected, it will be listed here
- NEVER let MacOS partition your drive for you. It will destroy existing partitions and create partitions that won't be bootable on a PC
- Format the partition you already created in Windows or Linux in Disk Utility
- Exit Disk Utility, and Setup will see your disk and give you the green arrow
That doesn't mean your system will actually BOOT off the disk once it's installed but it's a start =)

I've partitioned the drives disk utility without issue in the past... You just need to make sure it maintains an MBR partition scheme. It's true that it's impossible to create or destroy patitions in Disk Utility without losing all on the drive though.

<scratches head>
Having some trouble with both SATA (I understand it's temperamental) and IDE drives.
I've used XP's diskpart to partition the disks - no joy.
I've used GParted to partition (but not format - HFS+ not available)
Any other suggestions please?
System is a Intel DualCore 2GHz E2180 on a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R board with 4GB 800MHz RAM.
Have tried 250GB Hitachi SATA and 200GB WD IDE - both are fine under XP.
Systems boots up and launches Installer for OSX 10.4.9 uphuck r3 but still only sees the DVD drive (Pioneer 212 [SATA]).
Have tried altering AHCI and RAID in BIOS but no luck, also tried Native IDE and Legacy IDE settings but only default setting seems to allow installer to run.
All other settings in BIOS cause system to hang on Apple Logo with spinning gear symbol. Then a tiny square with a struck through circle appears.
I'll keep trying and report if anything changes...
I have a Bondi iMac (Rev B) with HFS+ and 9.2.2 - Could I use an IDE-to-USB2 converter to run the 9.2.2 Disk Utility to set the IDE drive up? I could format it at the same time...
Thank you for any help you can give...
