Random hangs OS X.4.9
I've got a problem with random hangs, especially DiskUtility and SystemProfiler tends to hang more than others. I can't Force Quit either, they just hang in the Dock with the spinning beach ball. My system also have a tendency to hang on Restarts and Shut downs. This always ends in a hard reset.
System:
Mac OS X 10.4.9 (8P2137)
Kernel-versjon: Darwin 8.9.1
Bad Axe 2 MoBo
E6700 C2D (Correctly recognized)
4 GB RAM (passed all tests, both Windows, OS X and TT Pro)
Please Help
Thank you.

I've not exactly the sames hangs, for me there are random and not random, they appears systematically with terminal when it open or close, i got spinning beach ball for 3 or 4 seconds like if the disk was sleeping. It also happens with software which open files like textedit. I check my disks never sleep.
My system :

I checked my powersaving settings, and I have my settings set to `never“ on all options. I reinstalled the fsb autodetect 8.9.1 kernel (made sure to set the right permissions), and things seem, for now, to work normally.

I have similar hangs quite often. I think that one might have been due to my M-Audio Transit USB, as I have had fewer hangs in iTunes, Quicktime Player, and System Preferences since disconnecting it. While those were the most common ones, others have hung on occasion, and I can almost never force quit them, whether it be from the dock, the key command, or terminal (using kill). Also once something beachballs, I can't reboot without forcing it.

Same issue as sarahbau
My rig crashes both randomly & predictably. CD & DVD burning with Toast 7 or 8 while multitasking is a recipe for disaster - hard reboot. VLC + multitasking, same. Otherwise I never know when or where it's going to happen. Oh how I hate the spinning beachball of death.
I cannot update the kernel to 8.9.1 on my ECS P4M8OOPRO-M_V2.0 either. After the BIOS screen it automatically reboots ad infinitum. I'd call that a hang! Anyone have any ideas on either of these issues?
UPDATE
I uninstalled vmware & that seems to have solved the problem. It may have also bee the .img files are unusual for macs. I've had similar toast crash issues on PPC macs in the past...
Thanks anyway.
UPDATE 2
4/24 kernel distro from koolkal works fine.
