After updating to the new 8.9.1 kernel, dmg's would no longer mount. To attempt to fix this, I replaced my IOATAFamily.kext with the one from the 10.4.9 delta upgrade.

Bad decision.

OS X will no longer boot...it tells me that "com.apple.iokit.ioatafamaily" cannot be found. I have all of the 10.4.8 kexts backed up...but throwing the 10.4.8 kext back on didn't help....

Is there anything I can do besides a complete reinstall?

Well I figured this one out pretty quickly....I just forgot the -R flag while copying the kext. Everything is all good now.

i've got the same issue...unable to mount dmg images...really sux

You guys would have to check your console logs right after trying to mount a dmg.

Most of the users report that i had, the System.kext seems to be responsible. (dependencies problem)

Can you post your here the error you get in the console ?
